Introduction by Ambassador András Simonyi
CTR Managing Director

Background

This year’s European Parliament (EP) elections, which take place from May 22-25, are said to be one of the most decisive in the history of the EU. For the first time there is a direct link between the EP elections and the nomination of the President of the European Commission. The European political groups will select nominees for president, and the member states will appoint the nominee from whichever political group wins the most seats in the parliament. Secondly, polls indicate that there will be a particularly high voter turnout for the far right populist parties.

European far right populist parties are basically ‘naysayers’, rejecting European integration, immigration, and ethno-cultural diversity. Their anti-immigration agenda is a major factor of their political success, and they have also acted as agenda setters, influencing the political program of more centrist parties. In light of these events, CTR is pleased to welcome the internationally renowned migration experts Andrew Geddes (UK) and Ricard Zapata Barrero (Spain) to discuss the latest trends of anti-immigration electoral mobilization in Europe. The discussion will be moderated by CTR Fellow Leila Hadj-Abdou. CTR Managing Director Ambassador András Simonyi will provide introductory remarks.
