Heimat: From German-Turkish Punch Line to Critical Cultural Practice of Belonging

 

The German term 'Heimat' translates imperfectly as “home”(soil), "the place, where one truly belongs", “homeland”, or “fatherland”. Humorous literary and audiovisual productions of authors with German-Turkish migration background challenge the idea of this term as a sociocultural concept of (racial, religious, linguistic, legal, etc.) inclusion and exclusion. These productions blur the lines between dated perspectives and multi-ethnic realities in contemporary German society and interrogate 'Heimat' as a powerful conceptualization of 'rightful' belonging in the modern nation state of the Federal Republic. More than just 'funny' books, movies, and television series, the narratives authored by members of Germany's largest ethnic minority population allow us to question issues of citizenship, culture and (minority identity) integration with the cosmopolitan formula 'universalism plus difference'. These issues, which have resurfaced more acutely than ever before in the German nation state, are also at the core of the unique and testing project that is called the European Union with its currently twenty-seven countries, 23 official languages, and strong sense of cultural diversity.
