Dear Members of the HUFS Community:
I’m sending this letter to offer my greetings on the 66th Anniversary of HUFS. First of all, I would like to send my warmest wishes during the difficult times of the COVID-19 crisis. At HUFS, we have been on active defense by implementing various measures, such as care for international students, restricted access for campus buildings, and online classes. So far, there have been two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our HUFS community, but fortunately they have completely recovered. Until this crisis is over, we will give our best to take preventive measures to ensure the safety for all in our community.
This past April 20 was the 66th Anniversary of HUFS. We planned on holding an anniversary ceremony, but it was indefinitely postponed due to nationwide social distancing measures. Furthermore, the opening ceremony for the newly renovated library was postponed, which all members of HUFS endeavored to bring to fruition. I wish I hadn’t had to announce these postponements.
To witness the unusual silence on campus grounds, with tree leaves turning green and flowers blossoming with colors, I can only say the campus feels unfamiliar without us together on its grounds. I remember the time when our students awaited to meet their friends and professors after vacation; when students returned with newfound resolutions after military service or overseas studies; when the entering class of HUFS headed to class with spring-like expectations; when professors longed to lecture in a new semester. I know we will all be glad when that time comes again.
The present situation has delayed our meeting as a community, but this delay has strengthened our will to meet again in a safer and freer environment. For the incoming class, I will offer my greetings online for the time being. But please remember that your fellow students and professors eagerly await the time to greet you in person here on HUFS grounds.
These are the times we realize how precious those days we once considered ordinary are. It is always, however, darkest before the dawn. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our professors, administrative staff, students, and alumni who have made us proud in various fields of society for the past 66 years. Once again, I wish to meet you all on our beautiful campus where new memories shall be made.
