Director of HUFS Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS, dubbed the Korea-Latin America Green Convergence Center) Chung Kyung-won hosted an international forum at the Jose Marti Cultural Society in Havana, Cuba. The forum was held on December 21, 2017, under the title of “ENCUENTRO DE BALANCE BILATERAL SOBRE COLABORACION ACADEMIA entre Club Martiano en Seúl, Corea y la Instituciones Martianas en Cuba.” At the forum, Korean experts discussed various topics. The topics include how to understand the Cuban Revolution and the nation's opening of its doors to the outside world through Cuban Independence hero Jose Marti, its implications on Cuban history and development, and Cuban educational and eco-friendly philosophies. They also proposed a range of measures to promote cultural exchange between Korea and Cuba. These measures include facilitating Korea-Cuba cultural cooperation, Cuban studies in Korea, studies on sustainability in Havana, and mutual efforts regarding the environment and climate change.
Dr. Hector Hernandez Pardo, Vice-Presidente Primer de SCJM, and four other SCJM officers also made presentations to introduce the ideas and philosophies of Jose Marti and suggested ways to integrate these into education. They also proposed possible areas for combined efforts such as international programs and joint research. For these areas, they requested more attention and support from Korean centers of Latin American studies.
