On March 9, 2018, the Institute of Russian Studies (“IRS”) hosted an international academic conference at Minerva Complex, Seoul Campus. The conference was held under the title “Understanding Northeastern Siberia and the Arctic Region: Society, Culture, and Politics." It kicked off with opening remarks by HUFS Vice President and IRS Director Kang Duk-Soo and the Director of Rossotrudnichestvo Seoul Office. During the conference, nine papers were presented and the participants had heated discussions. Three HUFS professors from the IRS made presentations on the region and its culture.
Professor Choi Tae-Gang in charge of the Center for Russian Studies at Hallym University and Professor Han Jong-Man in charge of the Artic Research Project at Pai Chai University also joined the conference. In addition, a total of 100 students, including 20 doctoral students, attended the conference. They had in-depth discussions on strategies to make inroads into the Northwest Siberian region, potential challenges, and future prospects for the development of Arctic shipping routes.
