On Friday, August 31, 2012, US President Barack Obama sent an autographed thank-you letter to President Park Chul of HUFS through Alexi T. Kral, a new counselor of the US embassy in Seoul. President Obama gave a historic address at HUFS earlier in the year.
In his letter, President Obama started with an expression of thanks for the gifts he received from HUFS on the day of his address. He added, "It was an honor to speak at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. The American and Korean peoples share an enduring bond, and I am confident that together, we will meet our shared challenges and build a brighter future for all nations."
When President Obama delivered an address on March 26 this year, HUFS conferred an honorary alumnus certificate upon him and presented him seals engraved with the names of President Obama and the First Lady in the Korean script (or Hunminjeongeum) and a pen engraved with 'President Barack Obama.' President Park Chul of HUFS, who majored in Spanish literature, gave President Obama a book from his own collection entitled 'First Step of Learning Spanish By Yourself' as President Obama expressed his regrets for not having learned Spanish.
HUFS built the 'Obama Trail' after President Obama's visit. It traces the footsteps of President Obama during his visit to HUFS. The trail became a popular destination for visitors of HUFS including alumni, high school students, and foreign guests.
