Steven Adoranti (TESOL대학원)
2017학년도 HUFS 강의상 수상을 축하드립니다! 벌써 두 번째 수상하신 것으로 알고 있습니다. 소감 한 마디 부탁드립니다.
Thank you very much! It’s an honour to be recognized with a teacher award for the second time. Like last time, I’d like to thank my department (Graduate School of TESOL) and my students for all of their support and hard work, which has made receiving this award possible. It’s a team effort, and I want to share this award with them.
교수님 강의의 어떤 부분이 학생들에게 좋은 평가를 받았다고 생각하시나요?
I’m going to say my enthusiasm. Students know when a teacher is interested in teaching, which means having a well prepared lesson framework for each class and being ready and willing to answer questions about the day’s topic. Arriving to class early and taking advantage of unscheduled time also makes lectures better, in my experience. For example as students arrive, I can start to make important connections with them and set a precedent for the rest of lesson. I find these brief conversations lead students, even the shy ones, to participate more in classroom discussions.
한국에서 강의를 하시면서 가장 어려운 점은 무엇인가요?
This is a difficult question.J It’s not easy to admit problems, but I’ll try. I think one of the biggest challenges for me in the classroom is how to present a convincing case for new and maybe unfamiliar ideas in a way that doesn’t seem to force students to accept my point of view or convince them that I’m right, but in a way that helps them to develop an understanding of different perspectives so that they can reflect and make informed decisions for themselves in the future.
학생의 어떤 모습을 보셨을 때 교수로써 가장 보람을 느끼시나요?
I feel proud of my students every time I see them in class ready to engage with the lesson whether or not they’re having a good day, every time they exceed my expectations on an assignment that I know was challenging to complete, every time they show their passion for developing themselves by being open to new ideas. These moments culminate on graduation day, which is the moment I feel proudest of my students. To see them in their graduation gowns with excited looks on their faces as we take pictures together, and to know they’ve accomplished something meaningful and invested in their future to the best of their ability, is a very satisfying feeling.

Be enthusiastic about what you do, even on days when you don’t feel enthusiastic, because someone who feels enthusiastic about something can inspire enthusiasm in others. And tackle your responsibilities with sincerity. Not every day is perfect, but we can certainly try to be our best.
