At 3:00 pm on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, the "Ceremony to Launch the 10th Internship at Korea Business Centers of KOTRA and the 2nd Internship at the Korean Culture and Information Service" was held at the International Conference Hall, Minerva Complex, Seoul Campus.
A total of 114 interns in the 10th group will be sent to 70 Korea Business Centers (KBC's) of KOTRA in 47 countries for six months. They will research economic issues and draft reports, provide interpretation and translation, support Korean companies with their local trade activities and investment attraction, and assume other related responsibilities. The 2nd group of nine interns at the Korean Culture and Information Service will be sent to seven Korean cultural centers in six countries to support their activities.
The launching ceremony presided over by Dean of External Affairs Jang Tae-yeop proceeded with the introduction of the progress of the internship programs, an oath by a representative of the interns, words of encouragement by President of HUFS, and presentation of memorials. In his congratulatory speech, President Park Chul of HUFS said, "As you go to business centers and cultural centers in each country representing HUFS, I call upon each and every one of you to stand proud as a HUFS student. And I hope this occasion will afford you the opportunity to show your true character and competencies while upholding the honor of HUFS students as you attune yourself to the world, acclimate yourself to your host country, and develop your capabilities as a global talent."
HUFS sent interns to Korea business centers of KOTRA for the first time in 2008, when it dispatched 16 interns to 14 countries. It has since dispatched a total of 655 students including the current 10th contingent. The KOTRA Internship Program selects students with excellent proficiency in foreign languages, outstanding academic records in their majors, and good character to dispatch them to Korea Business Centers of KOTRA overseas for six months. This program is intended to help students develop international savvy and practical skills as specialists in their majors. Any enrolled student who has completed at least the second semester of the second year is eligible to apply. Applicants are screened on the basis of the documents they submit, written examination, and interview.
In accordance with the MOU on exchange signed between HUFS and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last November, the first group of interns was also sent to a total of eight Korean cultural centers in seven countries in February 2012. The interns are selected twice a year, in the first and second half, and sent to Korean cultural centers overseas for six months. The application process involves review of documents, written examination, and interviews.
