Q. 자기소개와 현재 ISO에서 맡고 있는 역할을 알려주세요.

Please introduce yourself and your role in ISO.

A. 이름은 막스 뵈크만이고 이번 학기에 PR팀 부팀장으로 활동하고 있어요.

I’m Max Boekmann. I’m the vice team leader of the PR team this semester.

Q. 언제 한국에 왔나요?

When did you come to Korea?

A. 한국에는 작년 2월에 왔어요. 이제 1년 반 넘었어요. 지금이 4번째 학기예요.

I came to Korea last February. It's been over a year and a half now. This is my fourth semester.

Q. ISO를 하게 된 계기가 있나요?

Why did you take part in the ISO?

A. 독일에서도 한국학을 공부하면서 한국학과 학생회를 했었어요. 학생회 일을 하는 것도 재밌고 도와주는 것을 좋아해서 한국에서도 하고 싶었는데 올레라는 친구가 ISO를 소개해 주어서 하게 되었어요!

While I was studying Korean studies in Germany, I was part of the student council. Working for the student council is fun and I like to help others, so I wanted to do it in Korea too, but my friend Ole introduced me to ISO so I decided to do it!

Q. ISO 하면서 가장 기억에 남는 일이나 좋았던 점은 뭔가요?

What was the most memorable thing or good thing in ISO?

A. 저는 항상 첫 학기부터 지금까지 다 PR팀만 했는데, 팀장단으로 활동하는 이번 학기에 PR팀 분위기가 너무 좋아서 행복해요. 그리고 첫번째 학기 활동할 때, PR팀 사진사 하던 친구가 함부르크 대학교에서 있을 때 만난 친구인데, 그 친구한테 사진 찍는 법을 배웠어요. 그 친구가 진짜 사진 잘 찍거든요. 그 친구는 막학기였는데, ‘야야, 이리 와 봐. 이렇게 찍으면 돼’하고 저한테 가르쳐주고 나서, 제가 그 역할을 이어서 하게 되어서 기억에 많이 남아요. 아 또 여자친구도 ISO에서 만났어요. 2018년에 여름학기 하러 왔을 때요. 그 때는 스태프 아니었는데, 그 후에 한국 와서 ISO 덕분에 만날 수 있었어요.

I've always been in the PR team since the first semester, and I'm really happy that the atmosphere within the PR team is so good this semester. During my first semester in ISO, a friend of mine in the PR team whom I met at Hamburg University, showed me what to look out for when taking the big group pictures. He was a really good photographer. He said, 'Hey, come here. This is how you should take the pictures.’ It was his last semester. After teaching me how to take the pictures, I was able to inherit the role and it was very memorable. And also I met my girlfriend in ISO. When I came here as a student for the summer school in 2018, she was a staff member at that time. I met her thanks to ISO and later came to Korea and joined ISO myself.

Q. 한국 대학교와 독일 대학교를 둘 다 다녀봤는데, 가장 다른 점이 뭐예요?

You've been to both Korean and German universities, what's the biggest difference?

A. 음… 여기는 출석이 훨씬 중요해요. 독일에서는 가끔 너무 피곤할 때 집 갔어요. 그건 좀… 짜증나네요(웃음), 특히 1교시. 가끔 어떤 교수님은 20분 동안 출석 부르는데 진짜 재미없어요. 그리고 교수님이랑 관계? 

Well... Attendance is much more important here. Sometimes I just went home when I was too tired in Germany. That's a little... annoying, especially in regard to the morning classes(laughing). Sometimes some professors call attendance for 20 minutes and it's really boring. And… the relationship with the professor?

Q. 아, 맞아. 교수님이랑 좀 멀죠?

Oh, that's right. It's a little distant from the professor, right?

A. 네, 저는 괜찮은데 특히 한국 친구들한테 더 먼 것 같아요. 그래서 그런 분위기가 있긴 해요. 저는 교수님이랑 말을 많이 하는데, 분위기가 좀 달라요. 좀 더 공식적인 분위기 같아요.

Yes, for me it’s fine, but I think it's especially distant for Korean friends. So there's that kind of vibe. Personally I talk a lot with the professors, but the atmosphere is a little different. I think it's more official.

Q. 하와이안 셔츠 엄청 많이 가지고 계시잖아요. 오늘도 하와이안 셔츠를 입으셨는데, 하와이안 셔츠를 좋아하는 이유는?

You have a lot of Hawaiian shirt. And you wore a Hawaiian shirt today, why do you like it?

A. 원래 독일에서는 그냥 반팔티 입고 다녔는데, 이제 다른 나라로 이사했으니까 New Country, New Me로 좀 더 예쁘게 입으려고 했어요. 그리고 여자친구한테 첫 생일 때 하와이안 셔츠 받았는데 너무 좋았어요. 그 후로 생각보다 안 비싼 것 같아서 예쁜 거 볼 때마다 샀어요. 그 동묘 빈티지 시장 갔을 때도 5천원에 뽑았어요! 도쿄랑 경주 갔을 때도 샀고…

I used to wear plain T-shirts in Germany, but now that I was like ‘I've moved to another country, I'm going to dress more nicely. New country and new me.’ I got a Hawaiian shirt from my girlfriend on my first birthday in Korea and I was so happy. Whenever I found some affordable ones I bought them every time! When I went to Dongmyo Vintage Market, I got some for 5,000 won! I also bought some when I’ve been to Tokyo and Gyeongju.

Q. 도쿄에서도?

Even in Tokyo?

A. 응 3개.

Yeah, I bought three there.

Q. 곧 신입 스태프 모집이 시작되는데 한 마디 한다면?

Recruitment of new staff will begin soon, so what if you could say a word?

A. ISO하면 대학교 생활 Level Up. 인정?

ISO means university life level up. Don’t you agree?
