인도연구소 HK＋ 사업단 명사 초청 특강 안내 (Dr. Shahana Thankachan)

한국외국어대학교 인도연구소(소장 김찬완, 국제지역대학원 인도·아세안 학과 교수) 인문한 국플러스(HK＋)사업단은 오는 5월 26일(금)에 스페인 나바라대학교 Shahana Thankachan 박사를 모시고 제60회 명사초청특강을 개최합니다.

냉전 기간 동안 비동맹운동(NAM)의 대표적인 나라였던 인도가 미국이 주도하는 인도-태평 양 전략의 중심국이 되었다는 것은 인도의 외교 정책이 180도 방향을 바꾼 것을 보여 줍 니다. 그러나 현실은 복잡합니다. 인도의 외교 정책은 모순과 혼란에 시달리고 있습니다. 이러한 문제는 러시아의 우크라이나 침공과 중국의 인도와의 국경 지역에서의 갈등으로 악 화되었습니다. 이에 더해, 외교 정책에서 과거를 떨쳐버리는 것에 대해 미래지향적인 입장 을 취하는 정부가 집권하고 있지만, 동시에 변화에 저항하는 강철같은 관료들이 아직도 냉 전적인 접근 방식에 머물고 있습니다. 이 강연은 인도의 외교 정책의 변화와 내부 및 외부 적 요인을 중심으로, NAM에서 QUAD로의 인도의 여정을 살펴보고자 합니다.

강연자 Shahana Thankachan 박사는 현재 스페인 나바라 대학의 국제관계 조교수로 재직 중입니다. 그녀는 2021년 자와할랄 네루 대학교 동아시아 연구 센터에서 박사 학위를 취 득 했고, 인도 외교부 정책기획 및 연구부에서 2년 정도 컨설턴트로 일했습니다. 주요 연 구 관심사는 일본의 안보 및 외교 정책, 동아시아 안보 및 지정학, 인도-태평양 지역 연구 입니다. 현재 유럽연합(EU)의 후원으로 인도 내 러시아와 중국의 간섭을 연구 프로젝트로 진행 중입니다. 최근 "India-Japan Relations @70: Building Beyond the Bilateral"의 편집자 중 한 명으로 활동했습니다.

Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Institute of Indian Studies HK＋ Project team(Director Professor Kim Chanwahn) is hosting the 60th special lecture by Dr. Shahana Thankachan.

From being a country that was the face of the Non-Aligned Movement(NAM) during the Cold War to being the country that is the lynchpin of the US-led Indo-Pacific Strategy, India’s foreign policy has seemingly taken a one-eighty-degree turn. The reality, however, is more complex. India’s foreign policy is beset with contradictions and confusion. This has been heightened by Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine and China’s aggression on the border with India. Added to this, India is ruled by a government that is often too keen to leave the past behind in terms of foreign policy, while at the same time is anchored by an iron-clad bureaucracy that is resistant to change and is still nostalgic for the Cold War approach. The lecture seeks to map India’s journey from the NAM to the Quad, highlighting the evolution of its foreign policy, and the internal and external forces that have been shaping it.

Dr. Shahana Thankachan is currently working as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Navarra in Spain. Shahana received her Ph.D. from the Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2021. She worked as a Consultant at the Policy Planning and Research Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, Delhi for almost 2 years. Her primary research interest is Japan’s security and foreign policy, East Asian security and geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region. She is currently working on an EU-funded research project studying Russian and Chinese interference in India. She recently co-edited a book called “India-Japan Relations @70: Building Beyond the Bilateral”.
