Challenges, constraints, and rewards of doing classroom research on second/foreign language learning

Nina Spada   University of Toronto

As every second language (L2) classroom researcher knows doing research in school settings is complex. This is because schools are complex places with participants who have different roles and responsibilities and a wide range of goals, needs and interests that are not necessarily compatible with those of the researcher. Thus, one of the challenges for the L2 classroom researcher is to carry out a program of research that includes a component that has relevance for the teachers, students, and other members of the school community. Equally important is to do so in a manner that maintains scientific relevance and rigor. In this presentation, I will explore some of the epistemological, technical and ethical considerations related to carrying out sustained programs of L2 research in school settings. This will include a discussion of: 1) the ecological validity of research in classrooms versus laboratories; 2) descriptive versus experimental explorations of instruction; 3) the challenges involved in conducting research in classrooms with ‘real’ learners and their teachers; and 4) the necessary conditions for the development of sustained research programs in schools.
