Film Production

In this six-week intensive immersion filmmaking workshop, students work together on short film projects as they are introduced to the aesthetics, techniques, and practices of filmmaking. Students work closely with UCLA faculty to study directing, cinematography, editing, production, and creative collaboration while using UCLA equipment and sound stages.

Session C:  August 5 - September 13, 2024

Creative Producing

The Creative Producing track lets college students study the role of the creative producer or executive

while participating in entertainment industry internships. In class, students study the history of the Hollywood studio system and gain a critical perspective of the contemporary industry. In their internships, students apply those skills “on the ground” and build important relationships with industry professionals.

Last year's students participated in internships at companies including NBCUniversal, United Talent Agency (UTA), Sony Pictures Studios, and many more!

TV Writing

The TV Writing Summer Institute introduces students to writing for television in Hollywood. This track

mirrors the practice of professional writers in the world of episodic television and digital media by

teaching students how to develop original series concepts and navigate the contemporary

marketplace in a classroom environment that imitates the practices of a writers’ room. Under the

guidance of a TV industry professional, students learn how to identify and capture the tone, characters,

dialogue, and themes that make their story unique.

Students make their own animated film and meet Hollywood’s most accomplished professionals at the world-famous UCLA Animation Workshop. The Traditional Animation track teaches students how to write, storyboard, and draw their own animated film. This track will be offered as an online program with synchronous course meetings, practical exercises, and guest speakers. Students will learn traditional hand-drawn animation methods using a Wacom tablet/mouse, and utilize Pencil2D and Adobe Premiere to complete their animated projects. No drawing experience required, just limitless imagination!

June 24 - August 2, 2024

Sports Media

The Sports Media track immerses students in the world of sports entertainment. Sports Media students pursue production-based internships at live-sports entertainment companies. In class, students study the intersection of sports and entertainment and gain a critical perspective on the contemporary industry. Students learn how to identify elements of successful content creation that is both entertaining and profitable, as well as analyze key factors such as audience, programming, marketing strategies, and more.

See what past participants have to say!

“The UCLA Film and Television Summer Institute has given me the confidence and invaluable knowledge to successfully navigate the entertainment industry. Because of their outstanding curriculum, I have worked for major studios in the industry and will be joining the writing team for an upcoming Netflix series.”

— Joshua C., Creative Producing Student

"The UCLA Film and Television Production Summer Institute was a life-changing experience that not only gave me hands on experience with equipment that most film students could only dream of having access to, but also exposed me to an entire group of motivated and wonderful people to share the fun with. I made some of my closest friends at UCLA that summer, and we continue to collaborate on film work today."
— Evelyn D., Film Production Student

It's an incredibly helpful crash course in producing. You get lots of resources to help find your first internships as well as essential networking opportunities. The program may be fast paced, but if you love film and TV, it's worth it.
— Creative Producing Student Student

"To put it simply, the best decision of my life. I was challenged, I had the opportunity to learn things I never would have learned if it was not for this program. I gained invaluable knowledge of screenwriting, networking, and friendships that will last a lifetime for me... I was able to learn first-hand from successful writers and people who have had years of experience in their fields. They took their time to give 1 on 1 feedback, they taught us methods of pitching to industry leaders, they pushed us to create content that would exceed our own expectations."
––Jeremy D., TV Writing Student

"The UCLA Film and Television Film Production Summer Institute was one of the best choices I ever made. It was an incredible stepping-stone to what I hope will be an amazing career. I would not have started a production company or worked as a DP if I had not taken this program. The institute gave me both the technical skills and creative freedom to express who I am as a filmmaker. I am now producing a short film every other week with a group of friends, including a couple of alumni of the Institute! Even though the program ended, we stayed in touch, and I consider some of them to be family. Re(Set), the collaborative short we filmed at the Institute, is still one of the first pieces I show to industry professionals when I'm asked for examples of my work!"
— Amy L., Film Production Student

"The UCLA Traditional Animation program gave me hands-on experience, direction (in terms of which animation pipeline to pursue) and a strong network of talented professors as well as classmates. It was the perfect program to learn the expectations of the animation industry and I'm grateful to have been a part of it."
— Melody G., Traditional Animation Student
