Honorary Graduate Speech

TESOL graduate

Name: Kim, Jin-young

When I first decided to join this program, I had a full of excitement about knowledge and experience I will gain but also I worried about many challenges as a new person in teaching/English education.

At the beginning, I was not confident enough about the choice I made with TESOL program and even worse, I had no clear plan in my career at that time. However, I, as a graduate, can comment now that my decision with HUFS was absolutely right and it was indeed the best course ever for me. I felt impressed with so much valuable experience and useful knowledge I could gain through the quality of curriculum. Confidence and passion in teaching kept growing on me while I was studying at HUFS, I could be clearer and clearer in my next steps; what I want to be, who I want to teach and how I can apply those knowledge in real life situations.

Sometimes, students may feel overwhelmed and get stressed because of lots of assignments and microteaching in English. In fact, the curriculum at HUFS is quite intensive compared to others, but it will be a rewarding experience. Because of those classes at HUFS and internship at the university of Missouri, I got chances to teach many different groups of students, I observed how other teachers communicate with students, I got many new ideas to bring students' interest in language learning and I made a very impressive portfolio usefully applied in my class.

I recommend you to try to enjoy the program and challenges. In other words, do not worry too much about what you don’t know. We are all here to learn and to become a better teacher. I encourage you to not to be afraid of making mistakes and asking questions. I believe getting knowledge will start from asking. You have the very best teachers here at HUFS who always listen to you! Just try to maximize your learning opportunities. Plus, do not lose your enthusiasm in teaching and learning language. Teachers are life-long learners, put our continuous efforts in learning and sharing.

Lastly, be positive! Challenges never stop you and I truly believe that all of you can manage it well. Have a faith in your ambition and go for it. I wish you all the best.

Thank you.
