Content:

This report develops an appreciation for interactional troubles that find their source, not in the talk, but in manual action. We first describe two sources of misunderstanding in visible conduct: these concern material possessions used in interaction and the action implication of body behavior. Here we find that misprojection of body behavior as well as mistaken identity of objects can be targeted by remedial action. We next introduce a formal “phase structure” for manual actions that implement completable projects, and then establish its relevance by showing that onset of body trouble remediation (both self- and other-initiated) can be described in terms of its position within this “manual action pathway.” At each phase we show how remediation is achieved and then conclude by describing a source of coordinational trouble – reduced projectability – and showing that the same elementary forms of action adjustment used to handle troubles associated with misunderstanding can also be used to deal with troubles associated with coordination of manual action between participants and for coordination between manual action and talk-in-interaction.
