인도연구소 HK＋사업단 명사 초청 특강 안내

한국외국어대학교 인도연구소(소장 김찬완, 국제지역대학원 인도·아세안 학과 교수) 인문한국플러스(HK＋)사업단은 오는 4월 21일(금)에 인도 첸나이에서 활동하는 현대 시각 예술가 파르바티 나야르(Parvathi Nayar)씨와 극작가 겸 연구자인 나얀타르 나야르(Nayantara Nayar)씨를 모시고 제59회 명사초청특강을 개최합니다.

이번 특강은 인도의 현대 시각 예술가 파르바티 나야르와 극작가 겸 연구자 나얀타라 나야르의 “Chiken Run: 역사적 재해석 - 인도 한국사 아카이브를 기반으로 한 포토픽션”이란 작품을 선보이고 이에 관련된 내용을 소개할 예정입니다.

이 작품은 두 강연자의 부친인 Maj Gen TNR Nayar이 한국전 당시 인도군의 장교로 참전해 경험했던 자서전에서 힌트를 얻어 제 3국인 인도행을 택했던 한국전 포로 H의 인도에서의 삶을 사진을 통한 작품으로 구성한 실제의 사건을 기반으로 가상의 이야기입니다. 내용은 한국전의 포로였던 H가 인도로 온 후 인도군의 보호를 받고 1950년대 마드라스(현 첸나이)에서 양계장을 하면서 살기까지의 그의 개인사를 추적한 내용을 사진을 통해 구성한 것입니다. 이 작품은 첸나이 사진 비엔날레(the Chennai Photo Biennale III - Maps of Disquiet, 2021-22)에서 처음 공개되었고, 현재 첸나이 인코센터(InKo Centre Chennai)가 후원하는 대규모 프로젝트인 “변화의 한계(Limits of Change)의 일환으로도 소개될 예정입니다.

강연자인 파르바티 나야르는 드로잉, 비디오, 영화, 설치, 텍스트, 사진의 교차를 통한 다중적 예술로 인도 예술계에서 알려져 있습니다. 주로 도시의 기억, 환경과의 다양한 관계, 그리고 그 속에서 살아가는 이들의 다양성을 다루고 있습니다. 그녀는 주로 지속 가능성을 작품에서 다루고 있으며 예술 소재의 면에서 물(water)을 여러 측면에서 일관적으로 사용합니다.

나얀타라 나야르는 인도 출신의 극작가이자 연구자, 스토리 텔러로 도시 공간, 기억, 생태 위기에 관심을 두고 연구하고 있습니다. 그녀는 영국 Norwich의 University Of East Anglia의 박사 과정에 재학 중이며 연극과 공연이 물 위기에 대처하는데 어떻게 사용될 수 있는지를 연구하고 있습니다.

□ 인코 센터 소개

인도-한국 문화정보센터인 인코센터는 인도와 한국 간의 문화 간 대화를 확대하기 위한 목적으로 2006년 5월에 설립되었습니다. 인코센터는 최정일 전 주인도 대한민국 대사가 개관했습니다. 인코센터는 2006년 11월부터 어학연수, 건강 프로그램, 공연 및 시각 예술 프로그램, 정보 제공 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영하며 본격적인 운영에 들어갔습니다. 인도의 자동차 양대 메이저 기업인 TVS 자동차와 현대자동차 인도법인, 그리고 각각 47개, 8개 인도 중소 협력업체의 지원을 통해 인코센터는 2006년 설립 이후 지난 15년 동안 인도-한국 관계를 증진시키는데 많은 노력을 해오고 있습니다.

인도 현대 예술, 인도와 한국의 우호 관계, 제3국행을 택한 한국전 포로들의 일생에 대해 관심있는 많은 분들의 참가를 부탁드립니다.

Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Institute of Indian Studies HK＋ Project team(Director Professor Kim Chanwahn) is hosting the 59th special lecture by Indian contemporary visual artist Ms. Parvathi Nayar and playwright-researcher Ms. Nayantara Nayar.

Indian contemporary visual artist Parvathi Nayar and playwright-researcher Nayantara Nayar present Chicken Run: A Historical Reimagination - a discussion of their photo-fiction artwork titled Chicken Run, built from the Archives of Indo Korean Histories.

Chicken Run, first unveiled at the Chennai Photo Biennale III - Maps of Disquiet (2021-22), mixes fresh imagery and archival photos/videos to tell the story of Mr H, a Korean Prisoner of War, who did not want to return to his home country when the Armistice Agreement halted the Korean War in 1953. The fictional narrative traces his history from humble beginnings in rural Korea, through imprisonment as a Korean POW, to life in the Demilitarised Zone under the care of the Custodian Forces of India (CFI), to his life as a chicken farmer in Madras (now Chennai) in the late 1950s. The talk will set Chicken Run within the artists’ larger project Limits of Change, which they are currently researching. The work started from a note of autobiography – Parvathi’s father (Maj Gen TNR Nayar) went with General Thorat on the CFI’s recce of Korea, and stayed on till the completion of the CFI’s mission there.

Parvathi Nayar is known for her multidisciplinary art, centred on complex intersections of drawing, video, film, installations, text and photography. Parvathi’s art talks about urban memory, different engagements with our environment, and the philosophies of inhabiting them. Sustainability is a key area in her work, while a consistent theme is Water in all its aspects.

Nayantara Nayar is a playwright, researcher, and storyteller from India whose research interests include urban spaces, memory, and ecological crises. She is CHASE funded PhD scholar at UEA Norwich where she studies how theatre and performance can be used to tackle water crises.

□ InKo Centre Chennai: Chicken Run at Chennai Photo Biennale III was supported by InKo Centre. The Limits of Change project is commissioned by InKo Centre. InKo Centre, the Indo-Korean Cultural and Information Centre, was set up in May 2006 with the specific aim to extend the intercultural dialogue between India and South Korea. InKo Centre was opened by HE Ambassador Choi Jung-il, Former Ambassador from the Republic of Korea to India. The Centre commenced full-fledged operations in November 2006 with a cohesive programme that covers language studies; wellness programmes; performing and visual arts programmes and information provision. The unstinted, much-valued support by TVS Motor Company and Hyundai Motor India Ltd., along with 47 Korean and 8 Indian small and medium supplier companies of these two major two-wheeler and four-wheeler automobile majors in India respectively, has enabled InKo Centre to effectively celebrate and promote Indo-Korean relations over the past 15 years since inception in 2006.
