One of the main concepts in constructional research is that of a "construction", a pairing of form with meaning. On this view, a language consists of a structured inventory of constructions that is organized in networks. Over the past 20 years, most constructional research has focused on exploring the form side of constructions, highlighting its role in licensing utterances, sentences, and the like in a language. However, very little research has focused on determining the meaning side of constructions. This talk seeks to fill this gap by first providing an overview of how meaning has played a role in constructional research. The main part of the talk presents Frame Semantics (and its practical implementation, the FrameNet lexical database) and shows how the meaning side of many (not all) constructions can be systematically modeled with semantic frames. The last part of the talk discusses how lexical FrameNet has been expanded to also cover grammatical constructions using the same notation, methodology, and database structure. The resulting FrameNet Constructicon can be regarded as the practical implementation of a repository of constructions that does not rely on the traditional distinction between two separate modules "syntax" and "the lexicon."
