Functional Oxides and Interfaces for Energy Systems

Functional oxides and their interfaces offer new opportunities to overcome the current limits of energy and information storage systems. However, the understanding on complex oxide interfaces as well as their electrochemical reactions is far from complete, particularly with regard to ionic dynamics under applied electric fields. Exploring functional oxides and their interfaces using X-ray scattering will overcome the conventional trial-error approach.

 

In this project, we build a model system and to employ synchrotron-based experimental tools to detect and analyze the physical properties of functional oxides. Specifically, I will introduce our recent syntheses and synchrotron studies [1-4], e.g., resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and coherent Bragg rod analysis (COBRA) at Argonne, US and Pohang, Korea. With this methodology, we propose that we can study the relationship between activity and stability of active sites on complex oxide surfaces. These approaches will offer a much needed insight on understanding fundamental science as well as provide new strategies for the creation of new stable and active energy materials designed at the atomic level.
