－ This united, strong statement against the ruthless violence of Myanmar's military authorities is possible because HUFS faculty members are bound by a shared sense of humanitarianism.

On March 31, 2021 (Wed.), HUFS released a statement condemning the military coup in Myanmar and supporting the pro-democracy movement by the people of Myanmar. The statement, led by the HUFS Faculty Council (President Jun Jong-Sup), was made in 30 languages.

The statement was signed by HUFS President Kim In-Chul and 188 HUFS professors (148 Korean and 40 foreign professors) in support of the aspirations of Myanmar's people for democracy. To share the spirit of the statement with the global community, the original Korean statement was translated into a total of 29 foreign languages, including Burmese. Some of the translation work was done by HUFS faculty members. Students and faculty members from the HUFS Center for the Promotion of Critical Foreign Language Education also contributed their linguistic talents to translate the statement into 11 critical foreign languages, including Turkish and Uzbek.

The HUFS Faculty Council and the HUFS Center for the Promotion of Critical Foreign Language Education (Director Oh Jong-Jin) played a tremendous role in engaging HUFS faculty to sign the joint statement and translating it into 29 foreign languages. Regarding the statement, President Jun of the HUFS Faculty Council said, “This united, strong statement against the ruthless violence of Myanmar's military authorities was possible because HUFS faculty members are bound by a shared sense of humanitarianism.”

The HUFS Faculty Council, an academic body of full-time HUFS professors, prepared and released COVID-19 precautionary recommendations in 31 languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, and Russian, last April, helping not only HUFS international students but also foreigners in the nation stay safe from the coronavirus.

Founded under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for International Education pursuant to the Act on the Promotion of Education of Critical Foreign Languages and its Enforcement Decree, the HUFS Center for the Promotion of Critical Foreign Language Education offers a wide range of linguistic education programs for the public. The Center covers 11 foreign languages, including Turkish, Mongolian, Swahili, Uzbek, Persian, Malay-Indonesian, Thai, Portuguese and Brazilian, Polish, Hungarian, and Hindi.
