Since its inception back in 1954, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) has been committed to teaching an accumulating number of foreign languages and related or independent studies in the humanities, social sciences, business, education, and law. With this successful tradition behind it, today the university is progressing with leaps and bounds to win acclaim as a university with prestige on the global stage. Oriented towards the latter, with its double major undergraduate system in place HUFS endeavors to recruit talented students with a good command of foreign languages attracted to specializing in a whole range of language and international studies.
The university offers applicants two options for admission: early decision and regular decision. The early decision selects students with an excellent command of the foreign languages taught at HUFS. This type of selection, called ¡°Global Talents,¡±

involves two screening processes. The first evaluates applicants¡¯ scores on one or other of the following official foreign language proficiency tests: the Test of English for International Communication(TOEIC), the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL), the Test of English Proficiency developed by Seoul National University(TEPS), and the Foreign Language Examination developed by HUFS(FLEX). The second part of the screening process involves application writing essays in foreign languages. Candidates who aspire to secure admission by this type of selection should have high scores on both an official foreign language proficiency test and the relevant HUFS written test in the student hopeful¡¯s chosen foreign language.

HUFS aims to select applicants with talents in various fields of endeavor and with different backgrounds. Unlike the previous selection process that strictly focused on the academic achievements of applicants, starting from the academic year 2009-2010 the university has introduced the new type of selection process that included evaluating candidates¡¯ extracurricular activities. Applicants who have achieved recognition in one or more of the fields of sports, music, theatres, and science are eligible to opt for this new more catholic type of application option.
In the case of the regular application the Admissions Office combines the scores of each candidate¡¯s College Scholastic Test result and their Grade Point Average(GPA). As a special dispensation in the regular application option HUFS offers admission opportunities to college hopefuls from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and rural areas by applying lenient admission criteria. In this selection option, applicants openly compete among themselves.
HUFS also offers admission to outstanding international students from all around the world. As the university is home to foreign studies, in the age of globalization students from overseas are increasingly welcome to join the HUFS academic community. The university employs the same early and regular application options to select talented students from all around the world and to Koreans who were educated abroad. However, international students are admitted as part of an extra quota irrespective of the total quota of freshmen designated for HUFS.
Overseas Koreans whose parents are business expatriates or public officers posted abroad for more than two years are admitted to the proportion of two percent of the total intake quota. After thorough assessment of the required documents, applicants should take written tests in Korean and English. In addition, international students should pass an oral Korean proficiency test after the successful processing of the required application documents. As of the academic year 2009, 272 students from countries as far afield as Bulgaria, Belgium, Canada, China, Russia, and the United States were selected through this special admission process.

To attract talented students from both at home and abroad the university is conscious of the need to provide diverse application options to all would-be student HUFSans. In particular, international students are a much welcomed addition to the university community. All in all, HUFS is committed to building a thriving international study body. We appreciate your interest in the university.
