Center for Foreign Language and Literature Research

Institute of Foreign Language Education The Institute of Foreign Language Education was established to meet the needs of the information society in the era of globalization and improve theory and practice in foreign language teaching and learning systematically and efficiently. Through integrated research, development and actions in all fields related to foreign language education, including foreign language education policy and curriculum, study materials, teaching & study methods, evaluation and teacher training, it suggests more effective alternatives for the foreign language education system.


Institute of Foreign Literature The Institute of Foreign Literature was established in March 1, 1995 to play a pivotal role in promoting foreign literature in Korea through in-depth studies on foreign literature and also in translating and promoting Korean literature for foreign readers. Leveraging the strength of HUFS - rich, outstanding foreign literature manpower - the Institute actively pursues studies on foreign literature, academic presentations, translations, publishing and academic exchanges. Through such efforts, the Institute aims to improve the level of research into foreign literature in Korea and to give an impetus to the effort to introduce Korean literature to other countries.


Language Research Institute Established in 1969, the Language Research Institute is Korea’s first university research center specialized in linguistics. Based in research on the general features of human languages, it builds a theoretical foundation on foreign language education with studies focusing on phonetics, morphology, parts of speech and semantic structure of individual languages, which are the bases of linguistic studies. Through joint studies with some 30 language departments at HUFS, it also makes efforts in comparative studies on different specific languages. The horizon of humanities is broadened through inter-disciplinary research in related fields, such as cognitive science, computer science and IT.


Interpretation and Translation Institute The Interpretation and Translation Institute opened its doors on September 1, 1997 to support the development of rapidly growing interpretation and translation activities in Korea by defining theories in the studies of interpretation and translation. Through systematically defining studies in interpretation and translation, it has solidified the position of Korea in the 21st century, as it takes off toward the world in the fields of economy, politics and culture, to raise the international stature of Korea and lay a foundation for the globalization of HUFS. It also enhances theory and education on conference interpretation and translation, builds a world-class infrastructure for the studies of interpretation and translation and continually promotes international academic exchanges to step up efforts in leading the studies of interpretation and translation at the international level.



Center for International Area Studies Research

Institute of Japanese Studies As research on Japanese society and culture steadily accumulates in Korea, there is an increasing need for more comprehensive and systematic research concerning Japan. In response to such demand, the Institute was established to contribute to the advancement of Japanese studies in Korea through comprehensive research on cultural and social sciences of Japan, including language, literature, history, culture, politics and economy.


Institute of Chinese Studies Amid the increasing need to boost understanding of China in the rapidly evolving global environment, the Institute of Chinese Studies was established in January 13, 1972 as the nation's first special institute conducting comprehensive research on the Chinese region with young scholars and experts primarily from HUFS Department of Chinese Language, which had produced more graduates of Chinese studies than any other universities in Korea. The Institute conducts studies on Chinese region, including politics, economy, social culture, language and literature of China. It also analyzes and organizes overall Chinese studies, by era, doctrine and theory and investigate issues that needs to be pursued by Korea today. Currently, the Institute is organically linked and collaborates on academic activities with the College of Chinese Languages, which was elevated to the status of college from department in 2009, as well as with the Department of Chinese Interpretation and Translation, Department of Chinese Studies of the Graduate School of International and Area Studies, Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Graduate School, and Department of Korean-Chinese of the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation. It also engages in academic exchanges with many of China's notable education institutes, including Peking University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Shenzen University, Yanbian University, Harbin Normal University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.


Institute of Southeast Asian Studies The 11 countries in Southeast Asia are resource-rich nations geographically close to Korea, and Korean businesses have considerable presence in the region. Yet, there has been a dearth of research being conducted in Korea concerning the countries in the region. As the country's only university teaching the languages spoken in the region, HUFS pursues research in a wide variety of fields concerning the region, including politics, economy, culture, history, language and literature driven by teaching languages and literature as well as conducting area studies of the region. Through such efforts, the Institute strives to provide broad information and knowledge to government agencies, the press and Korean businesses operating in the region and furthermore to establish an academic system for research activities associated with the region.


Institute of Middle East Studies Aiming to contribute to relations between Korea and the Middle East through studies and research on wide ranging aspects of the Middle East countries, including politics, diplomacy, economy, society, religion and culture, the Institute of Middle East Studies was established in January 15, 1976 as an institute attached to HUFS in accordance with university regulations. As a research institute with the longest tradition among university-affiliated Middle East research institutions in Korea, it has secured a large majority of the most authoritative Middle East experts in the country. The Institute's primary activities include hosting conferences, publishing journals and database, exchanges with overseas academic institutions, gathering and translating Middle East-related materials, and collaboration with relevant government agencies. Because HUFS has concluded agreements to establish a sisterhood relationships with seven universities in the Middle East region, the Institute has been enabled to carry out a role as the only window for academic exchanges with various research institutes in Middle East countries.


Institute of British and American Studies The Institute was founded in March 1993 to respond more proactively to the needs of our nation and to deepen the depth of academic understanding by researching the society, culture, history, literature and education system of North America, notably the United States, and the British Commonwealth, particularly England, to contribute to realizing comprehensive studies. In August 2003, its name was changed from the Institute of North American Studies to Institute of British and American Studies with its systems entirely reorganized. Based on ample competency and experience in English affairs, the institute will continue to solidify its academic foundation by improving understanding of the regions through collaborative studies on the characteristics of England and the United States with other universities. The objective of the Institute is to provide information on the regions that our nation needs to continue the pace of political and economic development.


Institute of Latin American Studies The Institute was founded on July 1, 1974 to study the politics, economy, social issues and culture of the Latin American region and to cultivate human resources specializing in the Central and South American regions. Because exchanges between regions and academic circles are significantly expanding in the global community during the 21st century, the Institute strives to keep pace with developments in the region and take part in academic/industrial cooperation in order to contribute to the nation's advancement.


Institute of EU Studies The Institute of European Union Studies is a research center for undertaking individual or interdisciplinary studies on politics, law, economy, society, culture, language, literature of EU member countries and in-depth research on the EU, a superstate united body. The institute studies Europe by leveraging linguistic and cultural infrastructure unique to HUFS. Also with the help of professional staff fluent in German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Polish as well as English, it extracts accurate information and builds knowledge systematically.


East European and Balkan Institute The East European and Balkan Institute was established to pursue research activities focusing on humanities and social sciences concerning the former socialist countries in the middle and eastern Europe and the Balkan States, formerly referred to as the Eastern European Bloc during the cold war era following the second World War. Since the end of the cold war in 1989, the political, economic and diplomatic importance of the regions has increased not only for Europe but also for the national interests of Korea. That calls for a need to pursue specialized and in-depth studies of the regions more than ever. The Institute is the only research institution in Korea capable of conducting studies through the documents written in the native languages of the regions, and it has been carrying out research and academic activities with both expertise and practicality to meet the political and social needs of Korea.


Institute of Russian Studies In response to government's needs to pursue more aggressive academic exchanges with and conduct research on basic studies in communist states, HUFS founded the Institute of Soviet Union and Eastern European Studies on January 13, 1972 as a university affiliated research organization studying wide ranging areas of the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, including politics, economy, social issues and culture, in an effort to improve relations with those nations. However, following the dismantlement of the Soviet republics and the disintegration of the socialist systems in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, the institute was renamed to the Institute of Russian Studies to specify and specialize subject countries of research and make way for in-depth studies on the overall aspects of Russia and the CIS, such as politics, economy, society and culture.


Institute of African Studies Comprising 53 nations, Africa is the second largest continent following Asia and an important area of study for academic fields, including politics, economy and cultural issues. Through a series of recent democratizations, including cessation of civil wars and the adoption of multi-party systems, many African nations are poised to achieve political stability and economic development. As a result, the African continent is expected to take a more significant role in the global community than ever in the 21st century. The Institute of African Studies was founded on March 15, 1977 to boost the efforts to study Africa through in-depth research on the region and ultimately to develop an entry strategy into Africa and promote bilateral relations. The Institute was named a promising research institute studying overseas region to have received the Humanities Korea (HK) Fund from the Korea Research Foundation in November 2007 and has been conducting more active research since.


Institute of South Asian Studies Established in March 1995, it is the nation's only research institute conducting comprehensive and systematic studies on South Asia in various aspects, including language, culture, history, politics, economy, and social issues of South Asian countries - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. The objectives of the institute are to expand research activities on eight countries in South Asia including India to establish an academic system, and it is also committed to playing an active role as a research institute in disseminating accurate and wide ranging knowledge and information about the region to various organizations, including government agencies, press and private businesses.


Institute of Central Asian Studies The fundamental objective of the Institute of Central Asian Studies is to undertake diversified and general collaborative studies on the social sciences, including politics, sociology, economy and law, as well as the humanities, such as language, literature, culture, folklore, history and philosophies, of many countries in the Central Asian region. By pursuing joint research with other universities based on cultural understanding of Central Asian countries, the Institute strives to produce in-depth study results and facilitate exchanges with research organizations in the region. Through such efforts, the Institute strives to adhere to its founding purposes, which are to take a leading role in domestic and international studies on Central Asia and to help establish desirable Korea-Central Asia relations through a deep understanding of the region.



Center for Specialized Field Studies Research

Institute of Economics and Business Administration The Institute was originally founded as a HUFS-affiliated trade research center on March 1, 1969 but was renamed as the Institute of Economics and Business Administration on March 1, 1981. Its primary objective is to pursue studies on theories concerning economy, business administration and trade with a secondary objective of undertaking empirical research on a variety of actual issues related to such theories as well as studies on policies and strategies. By leveraging the extensive foreign studies research environment, which is a unique strength and critical asset of HUFS, which supports research on economy, business administration and trade, the Institute endeavors to achieve a tertiary objective - to contribute to the advancement and globalization of politics, economy and society that our nation strives for.


Institute of Philosophy and Culture Studies The Institute was founded on September 1, 1982 to seek truth through creative studies on philosophy and comtemporary culture, contribute to the peace of mankind based on truth uncovered through research, and create a new culture.


Institute of History and Culture The Institute of History and Culture was founded on March 1, 1984 to undertake comparative studies on the systems, philosophy, culture and history of regions all around the world. It focuses on studying the history of cultures, including living culture, archive culture and video culture of world peoples, and, based on these, exerts efforts in research and education for understanding different cultures. It also created a forum to analyze and compare Korean history as well as history of other regions in the world. The Journal “Studies of History and Culture,” which has been published since 1986, has been recognized for its academic achievements and was designated as a registered journal by the Korea Research Foundation (KRF) in 2005. The Institute is often selected to undertake projects outsourced by outside organizations, including organizations of Koreans living overseas and the KRF.


Institute for Communication and Information The Institute was established on March 1, 1984 to pursue academic and hands-on research and contribute to specialized education projects in the field of communication. The name of the Institute was revised to the Institute for Communication and Information in 1997.


Institute of Business Research The Institute was originally founded in February 1986 under the name of the Institute for Management Information Systems (MIS) to seek more rational solutions for management issues faced by businesses through research and analysis and to contribute to society by realizing advancement of management studies. It publishes the Business Management Research and MIS Research semi-annually. Its name was revised to the Institute of Business Research in 1997, The Institute actively initiates industrial/academic collaboration, dedicates its efforts to develop practical research competency through studies and development of advanced management techniques enabled by industrial/academic collaboration, and strives to contribute to the growth of the national economy.


Institute of Basic Sciences The Institute of Basic Sciences was established as a HUFS-affiliated research institution on February 11, 1986 to contribute to scientific and technological advancements required by the nation through efficient studies on basic sciences.


Law Research Institute The Law Research Institute was founded in 1992 with the goal of taking part in the research and development of Korean legal studies and to contribute to comprehensive studies along with foreign studies - one of the key features of HUFS ? by collaborating with foreign comparative law research institutions and international legal scholars. In addition, through comparative studies on legal theories and systems of Korea and other countries, it satisfies various legal needs that are rising as Korea joins the ranks of advanced countries and makes its own substantial and distinctive contribution to industry-government-university cooperation in the field of law.


Institute of Information and Industrial Engineering The Institute of Information and Industrial Engineering strives to contribute to the advancement of HUFS and the development of local communities and the nation by promoting the College of Engineering's effort to specialize by maximizing research efforts through close collaborations between different IT-related areas of study, and by cultivating outstanding students to become future leaders.


Institute of Environmental Science The Institute of Environmental Science was established aiming to develop new technology and preventives measures to preserve and restore the natural environment, resolve pending environmental issues effectively, and maintain a comfortable living environment for people in Korea and everywhere. In an effort to specialize its research achievements, it has signed academic exchange agreements with the University of Delaware, Utah State University and the Inter-University Consortium of Chemistry for the Environment, based in Italy. It has been participating in an environmental study project by the Environment Research Institute at Yanbian University since 2002. The Institute of Environmental Science is making a practical contribution as it is funded with over 200 million won each year by external organizations and actively provides technological support to private companies.


Institute of Global Politics The Institute of Global Politics was originally founded under the name of Saemaeul Institute on March 10, 1973 with the goal to pursue research on the politics of each region and overall international politics based on studies concerning all areas of politics. Its name was changed to Korea Institute of Regional Studies in 1979. Then it was renamed again to the Institute of Public Policies on March 9, 1993 to respond more practically and proactively to changing environments including the implementation of the local self-governing system and the improvement of North-South Korea relations, as well as to comparatively study the political and administrative systems of other countries. And, in March 1999, the name of the Institute changed to the Institute of Social Sciences to pursue more in-depth and diversified research activities regarding overall areas of the social sciences. Then, the Institute was renamed to the Institute of Global Politics on December 6, 2008 to maximize the characteristics of all research areas and has been undertaking various studies in independently separate research areas since.


Institute of Government and Governance The objectives of the institute are to pursue studies on public administration and policies regarding the activities of the government and public organizations in overall areas concerning the management of national affairs amidst a paradigm shift in national affairs management toward a cooperative system among the government, civic society and the market place, and to promote the expansion of academic activities to facilitate the studies.
