Institute of Japanese Studies

As research on Japanese society and culture steadily accumulates in Korea, there is an increasing need for more comprehensive and systematic research concerning Japan. In response to such demand, the Institute was established to contribute to the advancement of Japanese studies in Korea through comprehensive research on cultural and social sciences of Japan, including language, literature, history, culture, politics and economy.

 

Institute of Chinese Studies

Amid the increasing need to boost understanding of China in the rapidly evolving global environment, the Institute of Chinese Studies was established in January 13, 1972 as the nation's first special institute conducting comprehensive research on the Chinese region with young scholars and experts primarily from HUFS Department of Chinese Language, which had produced more graduates of Chinese studies than any other universities in Korea. The Institute conducts studies on Chinese region, including politics, economy, social culture, language and literature of China. It also analyzes and organizes overall Chinese studies, by era, doctrine and theory and investigate issues that needs to be pursued by Korea today. Currently, the Institute is organically linked and collaborates on academic activities with the College of Chinese Languages, which was elevated to the status of college from department in 2009, as well as with the Department of Chinese Interpretation and Translation, Department of Chinese Studies of the Graduate School of International and Area Studies, Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Graduate School, and Department of Korean-Chinese of the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation. It also engages in academic exchanges with many of China's notable education institutes, including Peking University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Shenzen University, Yanbian University, Harbin Normal University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

 

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies

The 11 countries in Southeast Asia are resource-rich nations geographically close to Korea, and Korean businesses have considerable presence in the region. Yet, there has been a dearth of research being conducted in Korea concerning the countries in the region. As the country's only university teaching the languages spoken in the region, HUFS pursues research in a wide variety of fields concerning the region, including politics, economy, culture, history, language and literature driven by teaching languages and literature as well as conducting area studies of the region. Through such efforts, the Institute strives to provide broad information and knowledge to government agencies, the press and Korean businesses operating in the region and furthermore to establish an academic system for research activities associated with the region.

 

Institute of Middle East Studies

Aiming to contribute to relations between Korea and the Middle East through studies and research on wide ranging aspects of the Middle East countries, including politics, diplomacy, economy, society, religion and culture, the Institute of Middle East Studies was established in January 15, 1976 as an institute attached to HUFS in accordance with university regulations. As a research institute with the longest tradition among university-affiliated Middle East research institutions in Korea, it has secured a large majority of the most authoritative Middle East experts in the country. The Institute's primary activities include hosting conferences, publishing journals and database, exchanges with overseas academic institutions, gathering and translating Middle East-related materials, and collaboration with relevant government agencies. Because HUFS has concluded agreements to establish a sisterhood relationships with seven universities in the Middle East region, the Institute has been enabled to carry out a role as the only window for academic exchanges with various research institutes in Middle East countries.

 

Institute of British and American Studies

The Institute was founded in March 1993 to respond more proactively to the needs of our nation and to deepen the depth of academic understanding by researching the society, culture, history, literature and education system of North America, notably the United States, and the British Commonwealth, particularly England, to contribute to realizing comprehensive studies. In August 2003, its name was changed from the Institute of North American Studies to Institute of British and American Studies with its systems entirely reorganized. Based on ample competency and experience in English affairs, the institute will continue to solidify its academic foundation by improving understanding of the regions through collaborative studies on the characteristics of England and the United States with other universities. The objective of the Institute is to provide information on the regions that our nation needs to continue the pace of political and economic development.

 

Institute of Latin American Studies

The Institute was founded on July 1, 1974 to study the politics, economy, social issues and culture of the Latin American region and to cultivate human resources specializing in the Central and South American regions. Because exchanges between regions and academic circles are significantly expanding in the global community during the 21st century, the Institute strives to keep pace with developments in the region and take part in academic/industrial cooperation in order to contribute to the nation's advancement.

 

Institute of EU Studies

The Institute of European Union Studies is a research center for undertaking individual or interdisciplinary studies on politics, law, economy, society, culture, language, literature of EU member countries and in-depth research on the EU, a superstate united body. The institute studies Europe by leveraging linguistic and cultural infrastructure unique to HUFS. Also with the help of professional staff fluent in German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Polish as well as English, it extracts accurate information and builds knowledge systematically.

 

East European and Balkan Institute

The East European and Balkan Institute was established to pursue research activities focusing on humanities and social sciences concerning the former socialist countries in the middle and eastern Europe and the Balkan States, formerly referred to as the Eastern European Bloc during the cold war era following the second World War. Since the end of the cold war in 1989, the political, economic and diplomatic importance of the regions has increased not only for Europe but also for the national interests of Korea. That calls for a need to pursue specialized and in-depth studies of the regions more than ever. The Institute is the only research institution in Korea capable of conducting studies through the documents written in the native languages of the regions, and it has been carrying out research and academic activities with both expertise and practicality to meet the political and social needs of Korea.

 

Institute of Russian Studies

In response to government's needs to pursue more aggressive academic exchanges with and conduct research on basic studies in communist states, HUFS founded the Institute of Soviet Union and Eastern European Studies on January 13, 1972 as a university affiliated research organization studying wide ranging areas of the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, including politics, economy, social issues and culture, in an effort to improve relations with those nations. However, following the dismantlement of the Soviet republics and the disintegration of the socialist systems in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, the institute was renamed to the Institute of Russian Studies to specify and specialize subject countries of research and make way for in-depth studies on the overall aspects of Russia and the CIS, such as politics, economy, society and culture.

 

Institute of African Studies

Comprising 53 nations, Africa is the second largest continent following Asia and an important area of study for academic fields, including politics, economy and cultural issues. Through a series of recent democratizations, including cessation of civil wars and the adoption of multi-party systems, many African nations are poised to achieve political stability and economic development. As a result, the African continent is expected to take a more significant role in the global community than ever in the 21st century. The Institute of African Studies was founded on March 15, 1977 to boost the efforts to study Africa through in-depth research on the region and ultimately to develop an entry strategy into Africa and promote bilateral relations. The Institute was named a promising research institute studying overseas region to have received the Humanities Korea (HK) Fund from the Korea Research Foundation in November 2007 and has been conducting more active research since.

 

Institute of Indian Studies

Established in March 1995, it is the nation's only research institute conducting comprehensive and systematic studies on South Asia in various aspects, including language, culture, history, politics, economy, and social issues of South Asian countries - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. The objectives of the institute are to expand research activities on eight countries in South Asia including India to establish an academic system, and it is also committed to playing an active role as a research institute in disseminating accurate and wide ranging knowledge and information about the region to various organizations, including government agencies, press and private businesses.

 

Institute of Central Asian Studies

The fundamental objective of the Institute of Central Asian Studies is to undertake diversified and general collaborative studies on the social sciences, including politics, sociology, economy and law, as well as the humanities, such as language, literature, culture, folklore, history and philosophies, of many countries in the Central Asian region. By pursuing joint research with other universities based on cultural understanding of Central Asian countries, the Institute strives to produce in-depth study results and facilitate exchanges with research organizations in the region. Through such efforts, the Institute strives to adhere to its founding purposes, which are to take a leading role in domestic and international studies on Central Asia and to help establish desirable Korea-Central Asia relations through a deep understanding of the region.
