English education has grown and changed significantly in the last decade. Here at the HUFS Foreign Language Center, we pride ourselves in being at the forefront of modern English Education trends. Because our program emphasizes the importance of real-world language skills, our teachers do not just lecture on grammar and drill students with listening activities; we create opportunities for students to actively practice the skills required for practical communication in English. We work extremely hard to help students master abilities that can be applied in real life: any time and any place.

: Bazil (Joseph) Manietta
M.A. Linguistics, University of Colorado Boulder; Bazil's background is in both theoretical and applied linguistics, and he has been involved in ESL education for the last 10 years. He specializes in English and Korean sociocultural and interactional linguistics, as well as sociocultural issues in translation & interpretation. Bazil is currently engaged in several research projects, including topics on Korean morphosyntax in acronymy, applying Conversation Analysis to understanding L1 influence on error production in an L2 (Korean/English), and several projects related to the construction of identity in Korean conversation. His M.A. research focused specifically on how the interactional linguistic work involved in producing South Korean masculinities relates to the transnational success of South Korean media.

In addition to having taught English, Korean, and Linguistics in the U.S. and Korea, he has held positions as the Department Head of Foreign Teachers in two different ESL institutions in South Korea, and served as the Lead Program Coordinator for the University of Colorado Boulder's Community Literacy Outreach Program from 2014-2015. Bazil's approach to second language education is largely influenced by his background in functional linguistic theory and his practical work experience with language. He focuses on blending traditional grammatical descriptions with real life, usage-based constructions while emphasizing hands-on application inside and out of the classroom.

: Andrew Lu
MS, California Polytechnic State University; Originally from Los Angeles, California, he took the Bachelor's course and Master's work at Cal Poly. He has taught several courses over the years at the FLTTC including: Writing, Listening, Pronunciation, Business English, Multimedia, and Discussion.

Teaching philosophy: I teach English in a dynamic style, creating an active learning environment, which actively engages students and makes the content more comprehensible. My lessons are based on lecture, dialogue, multimedia, and discussions. My philosophy of teaching is also based on my own foreign language learning experience as an adult. I like to share with my students some personal anecdotal stories of my struggles and accomplishments as a second language learner. In the process of learning English, students will acquire knowledge of a new culture and make great strides.

: David Matthew Hickey
BA in International Affairs, The University of Colorado - Boulder; David earned his bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from the University of Colorado – Boulder. Due to his deep interest in foreign languages and international relations, he decided to pursue a career as an English teacher, and has taught adults in Korea since 2015. In addition to teaching English, David spent nearly 10 years working as a firefighter/EMT in both the United States and the Middle East.

In the classroom, David strives to create an environment that is comfortable, engaging, and fun. He is passionate about teaching and in helping his students constantly improve. Outside of the classroom, David is a self-professed gym rat who enjoys trying to pick up the local language and exploring the local food scene.

: Mathew Klein
M.A. Applied Linguistics, University of Massachusetts Boston; Mathew has over a decade of combined experience in teaching English as a second or foreign language in the U.S., Korea, and elsewhere abroad. He earned his master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. His academic background is in cognitive and sociocultural linguistics with a specific focus on second language acquisition for ESL / EFL learners.

Mathew strives to create a learner-centered communicative classroom environment that allows students to connect with the target language in meaningful ways. His classes focus around several topics in thematic units that allow the learner to engage the English language through different task-based activities. His classes also encourage the learner to critically explore the different cultures of the English language while also reflecting on their own culture. In doing so, his classes aim to allow the learner to make meaningful connections with the target language in each class and use the language in practical and real-world environments.

Jeong-Eun Kim
M..S.Ed., University of Pennsylvania; Instructor Jeong-Eun Kim earned her master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from University of Pennsylvania. She began her career teaching English at a private high school in Seoul. In the United States, pursuing her master's degree she taught immigarants and refugees in an ESL program in the community. Since 2010 she has been teaching Grammar & Writing and Listening, which integrates four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing here at FLTTC. Her interests include teaching and learning English through various types of contexts in not only daily casual conversations but academic materials.

Hyeyoung Park
M.A.in Second Language Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa; Hyeyoung received her M.A. in Second Language Studies from University of Hawaii at Manoa. After that, she started her career as an English materials developer and then worked for 3 years in one of the major publishing companies in Korea. Since 2009, she has been working as a full-time English instructor here at the FLTTC, mainly teaching grammar/writing, listening and multimedia classes. Also, Hyeyoung has actively been involved in developing and publishing English course books and test preparation books.

Jiwon Chun
MA, University of Oregon, Applied Linguistics; Jiwon Chun achieved a Master's Degree in linguistics from the University of Oregon (USA). She has been teaching English at HUFS for 7 years in skills such as listening, writing, grammar and multimedia. Her interests are in developing curriculums and materials for English language programs in Korea. She has published a variety of English textbooks which are currently being used in Korean educational institutions and colleges. Her wide range of published titles includes TOEIC and reference textbooks for grammar, writing, listening and speaking.

Jihee Rhee
MA Hankuk University of Foreign Studies; Jihee Rhee has been teaching English at HUFS for more than a decade and has loved every minute of it! She has come to the conclusion that learning English should be fun, which is why she tries to incorporate various activities to help students feel comfortable in class. She has taught a variety of courses to students of all ages and from all walks of life but in particular loves teaching the students at the FLTTC, where they mostly learn grammar and writing from her. Both teaching and learning a second language require tremendous amount of patience and encouragement, and there is a lot of that in Jihee’s class.
