Overview of Dissertation Submission for Master’s degree conferral

a. Master’s students are required to submit the "Application form to submit Graduation Thesis(학위청구논문 제출신청서)" and the "Declaration of Responsible Research Ethics and Conduct for Thesis(학위논문 연구윤리 준수 확인서)".
   1) Deadline of Submission of the forms: The beginning of each semester(on March / September, Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.)
   2) Submission procedure: Master’s students need to complete the "Application form to submit Graduation Thesis" and the "Declaration of Ethical Conduct in Research for Thesis". The completed forms with the approval from the advisor and the head professor of each department must be submitted to the Graduate School office before the deadline of each semester.
   3) Eligibility
      i) Students who have completed the required credit hours
      ii) Students who have passed or are expected to pass all subjects of the comprehensive exam(graduation exam)

      iii) Students who have passed foreign language exam
      iv) Students who finished Thesis Guidance I with the same advisor
      v) Students who have registered for at least four semesters (within 5 years from the course completion date)    

      vi) Students who have submitted TOPIK Korean test or English test score such as TOEFL CBT, TOEFL iBT, FLEX, TEPS or IELTS. (Don't have to submit this score If they already submitted this score when they had applied.)
     ※ Those who want to submit their Graduation Thesis while taking Thesis Guidance I at one semester, they need to submit "the Statement of Reason(사유서)" additionally to indicate why they should do this two things at the same semester (after getting signature of advisor). There is no specificf form of this Statement.

b. Master’s students are required to submit the "Approval to submit Graduation Thesis" and the "Certificate of taking e-learning(Research Ethics)" to Graduate School office. 
   1) Submission deadline: on April / October, Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.
   2) Submission procedure: After getting signature to the form of "Apporval to submit Graduation Thesis" from advisor and head professor, submit it to Graduate School office.

    ※ The title of e-learning : 대학원생을 위한 연구윤리(인문사회/이공계열)

c. Thesis Defense

   1) Period : April ~ June / October ~ December(Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.)
   2) During this period, each department will set their own schedule of Thesis Defense, so students should check the exact date of thesis evaluation from the each department.

d. Thesis Evaluation Fee Payment

   1) Period : May / November(Please check the exact period on the notice board.)

   2) Fee : 150,000KRW (Those who already paid the Research Registration fee(연구등록비) with 20% of tuition fee don't have to pay this 150,000KRW.)

   3) Account number to pay : Woori bank 1005-101-144784(한국외국어대학교)

e. After the thesis defense, the result paper of thesis evaluation should be submitted to Graduate School office.

   1) Deadline : beginning of June / December(Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.)

   2) Requried documents :

     - Report of thesis evaluation result(학위청구논문심사 종합보고서)

     - Report of checking plagiarism(표절검사 결과보고서) including digital receipt(디지털수령증) and report(독창성보고서)

     - Report of checking plagiarism(표절검사 결과보고서) including digital receipt(디지털수령증) and report(독창성보고서)

     - Confirmation of advisor about the result of checking plagiarism(표절검사 결과에 대한 지도교수 확인서)

f. After all the procedure above, students should submit the printed(publicated) books of thesis to HUFS library.

   1) Deadline : beginning of July / January(Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.)

     *Print the graduation thesis after getting signatures of 3 examiners.

   2) Submission procedure: After uploading the PDF file to library website, visit the library and submit the printed thesis. And then, submit the "Confirmation of thesis submission after getting the "stamp" from the library, a copy of title page and ratification page(containing the signatures of all examiners) with the payment of 5,000KRW to Graduate School office.

 

Overview of Dissertation Submission for Doctoral degree conferral

a. Doctoral students are required to submit the "Application form to submit Graduation Thesis(학위청구논문 제출신청서)" and the "Declaration of Responsible Research Ethics and Conduct for Thesis(학위논문 연구윤리 준수 확인서)".
   1) Deadline of Submission of the forms: The beginning of each semester(on March / September, Please check the exact deadline on the notice board.)
   2) Submission procedure: students need to complete the "Application form to submit Graduation Thesis" and the "Declaration of Ethical Conduct in Research for Thesis". The completed forms with the approval from the advisor and the head professor of each department must be submitted to the Graduate School office before the deadline of each semester.
   3) Eligibility
      i) Students who have completed the required credit hours

     ※ Those who want to submit their Graduation Thesis while taking Thesis Guidance II at one semester, they need to submit "the Statement of Reason(사유서)" additionally to indicate why they should do this two things at the same semester (after getting signature of advisor). Academic Advisors

a. Academic advisors are the means by which the Graduate School provides individualized guidance for pursuit of the student’s degree and ensure that the student demonstrates academic excellence. With the appointed advisors, students can submit the graduation thesis/dissertation developed from the Thesis/Dissertation Guidance course, where master’s students are required for a minimum of 6 months of Thesis Guidance I and doctoral students need at least two semesters of Dissertation Guidance I & II.

b. Qualifications required for academic advisors
   1) Academic advisors for a master’s student need to at least be a full-time instructor of the faculty, sharing the
       same concentration area with the student.
   2) Academic advisors for a doctoral student need to at least be an assistant professor of the faculty, sharing the
       same concentration area.

c. Academic advisors provide the guidance on
   1) the student’s graduation thesis/dissertation writing process and thesis/dissertation defense
   2) the student’s course registration
   3) the evaluation of thesis/dissertation proposal for students in Thesis/Dissertation Guidance I & II
   4) the student’s overall school life and professional development

d. Procedure to request for academic advisors (available at Graduate School webpage Thesis/Dissertation Forms #2)
   Students obtain the ‘Request for Academic Advisor Form’ from the Office of Registrar, which sends ‘the list of students
   without advisors’ to the chair of the department. Based on the ‘Request for Academic Advisor Form,’ the student will have
   an interview with the chair of the department. Considering the student’s concentration area, the chair will recommend an
   advisor to the student. Then, after an interview with the recommended advisor, the student submits the completed
   ‘Request for Academic Advisor Form’ with signatures of the advisor and the chair to the Office of Registrar for the final 
  approval of advisor appointment by the dean of the graduate school.

e. Submission deadline for requesting academic advisors: Spring semester – the beginning of March, Fall semester
   – the beginning of September. Students are required to submit the completed ‘Request for Academic Advisor Form’ with
  signatures of the advisor and the head professor to Graduate School office. 

f. Change of academic advisor
   Students wishing to change from one advisor to another are permitted to do so. For any circumstance, including the move or retirement of academic advisors, students must initiate the procedure by completing Change of Advisor Form, which may be obtained via the graduate school webpage (Graduate School webpage Thesis/Dissertation Forms #1) and submit the form for the approval from the dean of the graduate school.

 

Research Registration(연구등록)

<Those who entered the Graduate School in 2017 or before>

a. Eligibility
   1) Master’s students whose course completion date has passed 1 semester AND those who want to submit Graduation Thesis. (For example, those who completed the course work by 4 semesters and want to submit Graduation Thesis at 6th semester, they need to register as "Research Registration" students(연구등록생). It means that if you want to submit Thesis at 7th semester, you don't have to pay research registration fee at 6th semester. If you can submit your Thesis at 5th semester, you may just pay Thesis Evaluation Fee(150,000KRW), not the research registration fee.)
   2) Doctoral students whose course completion date has passed 2 semesters AND those who want to submit Graduation Thesis. (For example, those who completed the course work by 4 semesters and want to submit Graduation Thesis at 7th semester, they need to register as "Research Registration" students(연구등록생). It means that if you want to submit Thesis at 5th or 6th semester, you don't have to pay research registration fee at 5th or 6th semester. If you can submit your Thesis at 5th or 6th semester, you may just pay Thesis Evaluation Fee(680,000KRW), not the research registration fee.)

b. Registration and payment
   1) Submission and payment deadline: The beginning of each semester(please find the notice board to check exact deadline)
   2) Submission procedure: Students must submit the completed ‘Request for Research Student Form’ (available at Graduate School webpage) and get the bill of tuition fee of research registration.

c. Registration fees: Registration fees are 20% and 30% of the semester’s tuition for master’s students and doctoral students, respectively.

<Those who entered the Graduate School in 2018 or after>

a. Eligibility
   1) Master’s students who complete the course work should register as Research Registration students from the 5th semester. For example, those who completed the course work by 4th semester and want to submit Graduation Thesis at the 5th semester, they need to pay 10% of tuition fee as the research registration fee. However, they need to pay totally 20% of fee if they want to submit the Thesis at the 6th semester. From the 7th semester, there will be no more registration fee. If they pay this registration fee, they don't have to pay thesis evaluation fee additioanlly. If they can submit their thesis at the 4th semester, they don't have to pay this registration fee, but just pay the thesis evaluation fee of 150,000KRW.

   2) Doctoral students who complete the course work should register as Research Registration students from the 5th semester. For example, those who completed the course work by 4th semester and want to submit Graduation Thesis at the 5th semester, they need to pay 15% of tuition fee as the research registration fee.(15% per semester) However, they need to pay totally 60% of fee if they want to submit the Thesis at the 8th semester. From the 9th semester, there will be no more registration fee. If they pay this registration fee, they don't have to pay thesis evaluation fee additioanlly. If they can submit their thesis at the 4th semester, they don't have to pay this registration fee, but just pay the thesis evaluation fee of 680,000KRW.

   2) Submission procedure: Students must submit the completed ‘Request for Research Student Form’ (available at Graduate
       School webpage) and get the bill of tuition fee of research registration.

c. Registration fees: Registration fees are 10% per semester and 15% per semester for master’s students and doctoral students,
    respectively. (at most 2 semester and 4 semester for master's and doctoral course respectively)

 

 

<Those who need to register to keep the "status of student" for any reason from the 5th semester>

a. We call it "연구생 등록" in Korean, and it is different from Reserach Registration(연구등록) which is required to submit Graduation Thesis.

b. It is only for those who need to keep the status of student by paying the registration fee to participate in any projects or other reasons.

c. The fee of this kind of registration is 100,000KRW per semester,

d. Students who want to submit the Graduation Thesis should not pay this kind of fee because they should pay Research Registration fee(연구등록) with 20% or 30% of tuition fee.

e. The application and payment period of "연구생 등록" is different from Research Registration(연구등록), so please check the notice board to find the exact period.

 

Registration of Thesis Guidance I & II

 a. Eligibility
   1) For Thesis/Dissertation Guidance I, master’s students and doctoral students must have registered for at least three (3)
       semesters and two (2) semesters respectively.
   2) Only doctoral students who have completed their Dissertation Guidance I may register for Dissertation Guidance II.

c. Students need to confirm their registration for Thesis/Dissertation Guidance I and II from the course registration page of
    the [General Academic Information].

d. Important Notice
   1) The Thesis/Dissertation Guidance offered to students without academic advisors are not acknowledged. Students, 
       who are not assigned of academic advisors, must submit the ‘Request for Academic Advisor Form’ and to the Office
       of Registrar by the beginning of March (Spring semester) and September (Fall semester).
   2) Students will be evaluated by the thesis/dissertation proposal held in a public forum for the advisor’s review. Students are required to submit the ‘Evaluation of the Graduation Thesis/Dissertation Proposal’ (available at Graduate School webpage Thesis/Dissertation Forms #5) to the Graduate School’s Office of Registrar at the end of the semester
   3) Thesis/Dissertation Guidance courses carry no weight and do not count as accumulated hours. However, the completion of the course is required for the graduation with a passing grade of 70% (C).
   4) Registered students for Thesis/Dissertation Guidance will be graded ‘0’ and required to retake the course, if students fail to submit the ‘Evaluation of the Graduation Thesis/Dissertation Proposal.’
   5) Before the thesis defense, a master’s student must complete Thesis Guidance I.
   6) Doctoral students are required to complete Thesis Dissertation I and II to be eligible for the dissertation defense.

 

Requirements for the Completion of Coursework

a. Master’s degree
   1) Maintain registration for at least four (4) semesters
   2) Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of graduate study (a minimum of 33 hours for students in the department of Area Studies, Archives and Information, and KFLT. a minimum of 30 hours for Global Culture & Contents)
   3) 6-12 credit hours of supplementary course work (if applicable)

b. Doctoral degree
   1) Maintain registration for at least four (4) semesters
   2) Complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of graduate study
   3) 9-12 credit hours of supplementary course work (if applicable)

 

 

Requirements for Graduation (Degree Conferral)

a. Master’s degree
   Before degree conferral is possible, all Master's candidates must:
   1) Maintain four (4) semesters of registration
   2) Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of graduate study (a minimum of 33 hours for students in the department of Area Studies, Archives and Information, and KFLT. a minimum of 30 hours for Global Culture & Contents)
   3) Obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.0
   4) Complete 6-12 credit hours of supplementary course work (if applicable)
   5) Complete Thesis Guidance I
   6) Pass a comprehensive examination and proficiency test in foreign language
   7) Complete and defend an acceptable master's thesis
   8) Have completed the coursework less than 5 years ago

b. Doctoral degree
   Before degree conferral is possible, all Doctoral candidates must:
   1) Maintain four (4) semesters of registration
   2) Complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of graduate study
   3) Obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.0
   4) Complete 9-12 credit hours of supplementary course work (if applicable)
   5) Complete Dissertation Guidance I and II
   6) Pass a comprehensive examination and a proficiency test in foreign language
   7) Have completed the coursework less than 10 years ago
   8) Complete and defend an acceptable doctoral dissertation
