Seminars will provide a functional and hands-on approach for effective teaching. Participants will learn:

  • practical applications for classroom teaching based on the latest advances in theory and practice of second language education and methodology from some of the field’s leading research scholars and practitioners;
  • to apply the most effective methods in their teaching practices;
  • to apply skills in student-centered teaching to promote cooperative and collaborative learning;
  • to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for more effective presentation of class content;
  • to have first-hand experience with American culture and be able to convey this to their students;
  • to practice intercultural communication through dialogs with Intensive TESOL Training Participants from other cultural backgrounds;
  • to practice academic vocabulary with non-native as well as native speakers of English, and therefore increase confidence levels for teaching ESL/EFL in the target language.

Practical Applications will be carried out through the following activities:

  • Sessions on methods and techniques used in American schools: Sessions will be conducted by CSUSB faculty and expert local school teachers on content that participants will observe when they visit the local schools.
  • Sessions on student-centered instruction: Effective teaching cannot occur unless the students are paying attention, motivated to participate, and interested in the subject matter to get students to work cooperatively and still be able to cover one’s syllabus. These sessions will emphasize techniques that can be used to help create autonomous, self-directed learners, who are capable of working independently or in groups without disrupting the class.
  • School visits: Participants will work together with local school teachers and apply the knowledge they have acquired in the sessions on techniques and methods in a friendly environment with a teacher who has been specially selected because they are experts in using these techniques. Each school will have a lead teacher who is responsible for overseeing the participants’ visits at the school. Each day, when participants return to the university from their school visits, we will have debriefing sessions to discuss the techniques that they worked on and observed that day. Participants will spend one afternoon participating in the schools’ Professional Development Communities, where they will work with local school teachers who meet weekly to continually improve their own instruction.

English Language Proficiency Development will be achieved through guided English language development activities with native English speakers:

  • English Assessment will be conducted by our resident expert in English assessment. The results of this test will be used to separate the participants into two groups based on their English proficiency. A post-test evaluation will also be used to determine areas in which participants improved during the course of the Program as well as areas that still need improvement.
  • Skill-based Classes for English Proficiency will be offered for students to improve their listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar.

American Cultural Experience

  • The homestay program will provide participants with a rich immersion environment where they will develop cross-cultural understanding and have additional practice of their English language skills through interaction with American host families while deepening their overall knowledge of the U.S. To help participants better adjust to their homestay families, the Program will offer American Family Life sessions and office hours with the homestay coordinator to be able to discuss adjustment issues in private.
  • Intercultural Communication: Participants will set up an online intercultural exchange with a TESOL Training Program participant from another country, employing interviews, personal conversations, intercultural discussions, and a cultural excursion to become better acquainted with teachers from other cultures and to learn about effective communication with individuals from other cultures.

Schedule Summary: the program schedule consists of
