Interview with EIT Alumni (Interview with EIT Alumnus)

S K Kang

Second Secretary, North American Division II

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Interpretation and Translation Major, College of English (Entrance year of 2005)

1. (EIT) Thank you for having your time for the “Interview with EIT Alumni.” Would you please introduce yourself to the EIT students?

(Kang) It is a great pleasure and personally I am honored to have this interview for the EIT students. My name is Sukyung Kang. I passed High Diplomatic Service Examination in June, 2011 and currently am working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. (MOFAT)

2. (EIT) Can you tell us about what you are doing for the company and what led you to choosing your job?

(Kang) Basically what MOFAT does is to strengthen foreign relations in and out of country. In particular, since I am working for North America Division II, we are mostly dealing with our counterparts in the US and Canada. We, not only cooperate with our delegation in Korean Embassy and Consular offices in the US and Canada, we also work in cooperation with our counterparts in US and Canadian Embassy.

3. (EIT) It seems you are really enjoying your job. Do you think what you learned in the Department of EIT helps you perform your job? If yes, can you tell us which specific courses or activities were the most helpful?

(Kang) My answer is definitely yes. Since the EIT courses and activities are mostly focused on learning practical English, what I learned in the Department helps in many aspects. For our daily work, English is a main working language, (i.e. we listen to CNN to find out what is going on in the US, we write email to our counterparts in US Embassy, we read English articles and we also speak to foreign members of delegation who visit Korea) therefore all English courses, English writing, reading, listening, speaking, have been really helpful.

4. (EIT) Lastly, can you give some advice to the students on student lives and how they can get successful results in the job market?

(Kang) I am very proud of being an EIT alumnus and I hope this interview will help those who are dreaming of becoming a diplomat or working for any relevant field know briefly about what they may be able to do in the future. If you have any further question, it is always welcomed to send me an email. My email address is: skkang11@mofat.go.kr Thank you very much!
