Report on Internship in Nepal
I’ve finished my internship at one of local NGOs in Nepal, DAIL community for a year. I was in charge of administration of education development project-so called HOPE SCHOOL. HOPE SCHOOL is located in the Manohara, Bhaktpur and it is a part of alternative school project which have provided primary education to children who live in poor village nearby Manohara river side, especially focusing on those who come from Terai region and migrate from India and children who do not adjust general education as well. Those who complete whole courses, they could obtain qualifications for applying test to a school go authorization by the Ministry of Education in Nepal. This project is funded by Korea International cooperation agency (KOICA) from Jan 2013 to Jan 2015 and is being administered through here DAIL community in Nepal. This slum area is one of the biggest one in
Kathmandu city and 600 to 700 numbers of households living here. Unfortunately,
most children they used to go begging on the street for means of living and
their parents earn within 2 dollars only per month by labor. Those people had been
faced on difficulties of accessing good quality food and clean water i.e.,
basic needs from their place so children have no knowledge of necessity of
sanitation. In those reasons, we also provided them cleanliness awareness
program; before they eat, they become know about importance of hand washing and
brushing their teeth. Our fundamental goal is to stopping those vicious circles
of poverty by providing education.
I’ve got some lessons through project
implementation: firstly, in the process of doing project, being generosity is required
for people who are in charge of the project. There might be happened hard
situations between local people and staff, even director because of
misunderstandings or differences of thinking. In field work place, lots of
variability exist so, we need to pay regard to each one then finally could
reach best alternative decision. Because project not being proceed with one
head person, but by each individual sector together. In the perspective of
having experiences of implementation of development project, I would like to appreciate
my co-workers and directors’ cooperation and
local people’s kindness as well.
