WorkⅠ
At the Korean delegation to the OECD, interns attend the OECD meetings with directors and take the minutes. The meetings that I attended were about <Trade> and <Governance>, which were the divisions where I was belonging. To attend the meeting at the OECD headquarters, I registered for the meeting in advance, searched for related materials and studied the issue. In the beginning, I was unfamiliar with most of subjects and all the technical terms. Without these preparation works, therefore, it was almost impossible
to follow the meeting. Major issues of the meetings that I attended were <Trade Liberalisation>, <Non-tariff measures> and <Regional Development> etc. Sometimes it took too much time to learn some new knowledge in a new area that I had never studied. However, the fact that I was working with global leaders always motivated me to keep working and learn more.
Work Ⅱ
It is also the interns’ work to support the events held by the delegation. For example, the Korean delegation held the first <Career Fair for International Organisations> in Paris, France in July 2011. That fair was to help young students to have an opportunity to
meet employees working in the international organisations and to learn how to prepare a job interview. There were about 200 attendees who were interested in working in the international organisation. The Korean delegation invited guest speakers from UNESCO, OECD, ITER etc. They shared their working experiences and gave a lecture about what kind of talents the organisations want to hire. It was also impressive that all the young attendees showed a great interest in the career fair.
Reflections
The internship is a valuable opportunity for students to have a working experience and to find out what they sincerely want to do in the future. I want to emphasize the importance of knowing what you really want to do with passion. Once you find the answer, it will be easier and faster to get closer to your goal. I was lucky because I could find out what I really want to do in my life through this internship. Before starting the internship, however, you should be well prepared for it. It can be a language skill, business attitude or some technical knowledge. Then you will have more chances. I did not expect that they would send me to the official OECD meeting, but I attended the official meeting regularly with directors from the first day of work. Even though the meeting finished late sometimes or there were tons of things to prepare beforehand, it was my pleasure to attend the meeting and to learn the ongoing global issues. If directors didn’t see me enjoying the work or my job performance was not that good, however, I couldn’t have had that many opportunities to experience real international meetings.Lastly, I could find out what my strengths and
weaknesses are through this internship, which helped me to define what I had to improve.
I appreciate the directors and interns’ help at the delegation who encouraged me to move forward to my goal.
