[3+1] University of Nairobi, Kenya
Middle East and African Studies 201248024 KIM USUK
When I arrived in Nairobi, the first thing that I should do was finding accommodation because I could not get a confirm from school to use University's Hostel. (I got a room after 2 weeks later) My first impression of University of Nairobi (UON) was well-established buildings and beautiful school scenery. The huge lawn, in the front of adminstration building (main building), provides students for place of free discussion and rest. School says anywhere in the university is WiFi zone but it depends on where you are standing now. UON is distributed the departments over many school campuses. The school year is divided into three trimesters. The Sociology Department that I applied for is located in main campus of UON. All people are checked their ID card and belongings at the front of each buildings by security.
My first semester started mid of January. I studied sociological theory or research methods for rural development etc with many resident students and other African countries' students; Nigeria, Burundi, DRC and Somalia. Every classes took full 3 hours and active discussion without intervals. Discussion and dictation were hard to follow up for me at the first time but I could enjoy to attend discussion and became to understand African-English speaking.
3+1 program provides a good chance for me to widen a view of study areas that I cannot get through academic studies. Although I cannot say that I full understand whole Africa with experience a small part of Africa, it helps to break a bias toward a vague positiveness and can accept as it is about Africa.
