Call for Papers

Welcome to [ERGOSHIP 2021]

Dear Sir or Madam,

It is our great pleasure to cordially invite you to take part in 4th International Conference on "ERGOSHIP 2021" hosted by Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences from 2 to 3 September 2021 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The Conference is jointly organized by Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering.

The technological realization for operating Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) system is close to becoming a reality. To accept this new technology, IMO started the Regulatory Scoping Exercise (RSE) for MASS, and this work will be completed in 2020. Among various results of MASS RSE, here are the key issues of the MASS RSE (Chong-Ju Chae et al, "A Study on Identification of Development Status of MASS Technologies and Directions of Improvement", Applied Science, 2020):

1.       Clear understanding of the seafarer’s task on a vessel under the current IMO instruments;
2.       Clear identification on whether seafarers onboard or not depending on the level of autonomy of MASS, and clear classification of seafarers or personnel responsibilities for their tasks onboard; and
3.       Accordingly, it is required to establish new standards for the definition of seafarer, and the need for clear division of roles and responsibilities of staffs, remote operators, captains and etc.

Clearly, the research and development of various technologies related to MASS should be mainly focused on Human Factors. Therefore, the researchers related to these following subjects should be conducted with a higher priority: understanding the relations between MASS system and its operators; identifying safety issues within the system; consideration of labor factors while designing the MASS system; and application of simulation in MASS.

At this crucial time, we, Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT), together with the Norway University of Applied Sciences are interested in the results of research related to MASS and Human Factors. We fully anticipate that the participation and contributions of researchers & scholars at ERGOSHIP 2021 is a valuable asset to the success of the event.

Papers Submission

The abstract papers will be peer-reviewed before acceptance, to maintain the quality of the full paper submission in order to meet the requirements of the academic and research community. This Conference will rely on its Committees as the main contributing body to the review process and acceptance of papers. The Conference will be held in Busan, the second largest city in the Republic of Korea, the largest container handling port in the country and the fifth largest in the world. Busan is a thriving center of business, a newly emerging city as a hot spot destination for international conventions.

On the website you can find the program schedule and the procedures for abstract submission.
