Report for 3+1 dispatch program:
The American University in Cairo
Middle Eastern and African Studies
201148077 So Yeon, Choi
When I decided to choose 3+1 dispatch program, I thought I could have some great opportunity which I can study in abroad vaguely. It was my first experience to study at another university in foreign country.
I visited Egypt before but I never had visited The American University in Cairo (AUC) before. The campus which is newly constructed was extremely beautiful and the whole facilities had the latest style. Also it has everything that students want such as gym, pool, international student council.
When I entered the campus, there was no way that I can hide my surprise. You cannot get enter the campus without your AUC ID and you need to put your luggage in security device like airport. It is not opened to outsiders and highly protected by any risk element.
Egypt is Muslim country so it is hard to see women who does not wear hijab or expose by themselves. Also when you walk on the street in Cairo, most of people may pay attention to you and sometimes annoy you because you are foreigner. But AUC was completely different world. It has own atmosphere which is very free and Americanized. It is difficult to find women in hijab and no one cares about you in AUC. It was so impressed for me.
I visited the American university in Cairo, Egypt as a non-degree program student for fall semester, 2011. I took two courses which is “Middle East Politics”, “The new critical introduction of Middle Eastern studies”. AUC is fully instructed in English. And there are 30-40% of American students but all of my classmates were American except me since my major was Middle Eastern studies. The students had various backgrounds in their bachelor degree in different universities. I proud to say that I am a student of GSIAS in HUFS, only one graduate school that research Middle Eastern and African studies in Korea
From the beginning of my life in AUC was really tough. It has completely different education system which came from the United States. Students lead the class. And it was run by presentation and free discussion of students and there is no high barrier between students and professor. So I could not adjust in the atmosphere easily. There was presentation every two weeks and reading material which covered around 800 pages every week. It was challenging job for me. Especially I had some trouble in presentation. I thought I never can get over this situation but day by day I felt I grew up. I had special consultation with my professor every week and finally could finish my courses.
From the classes, I could learn new trend in Middle East politics. And my American colleagues who broke stereotype about American students gave me big motivation for study. They made me feel that there are many competitors who study Middle Eastern area in the world not only in Korea. It inspired me that if I do not study hard, I am going to be turned over in very soon. But my colleagues were not only my competitors. They helped me in many fields and we used to talk and discuss our research. It will be unforgettable memories.
I learned and gained a lot from 3+1 dispatch program. I strongly recommend this program and AUC for you. You will have awesome experience in your life.
