Seo Ji Won
Department of Chinese Studies
I'm a student majoring in Chinese studies who attended 3+1 study abroad
program at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences for the spring semester
The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences was founded in 1985 and it is
administrated the Municipal Government of Shanghai. It is China’s oldest
research institution for the humanities. Also it is a non-profit
organization and oriented in Shanghai issues, it independent from the
Chinese Academy of social Sciences (CASS).
Their mission is to conduct high-quality and objective theoretical research
for the nation and municipality. Using this research, They aim to provide
effective, enduring and innovative public policy recommendations,
consultation and education in the process of guiding social transformation
The main purpose was to write my graduation dissertation on the basis of
local data in China with the help of the professor Ma Chi, who had been an
exchange professor of Chinese studies in the Graduate School of
International Area Studies. And my goal was somewhat accomplished.
Especially, it was a great opportunity to be able to develop my thesis
more profoundly because the classes there covered a lot of contents
associated with my thesis.
Furthermore, the life by myself in a remote place away from my family for
the first time made me feel and think more about China I'd been studying.
It was unobtainable precious experience unless I was a student.
I give special thanks to GSIAS for giving me this wonderful change and to
professor Jun Young Kang for his thoughtfulness from Korea. And, I also
give a big thanks to professor Ma Chi for his help and guidance.
