KOTRA INTERNSHIP (Cairo KBC) -Sinae Choi
As a student studying Middle East Area Studies in the graduate school, I had a desire to learn in the field and find out my potential ability to work in the area of international relations between Korea and Egypt. That’s why I applied for the internship in KBC Egypt of KOTRA.
My internship period was supposed to start in February, so I left for Cairo 29th of January, but Cairo was in a big chaos because of democratic revolution at this time. According to the policy of KOTRA, I had to come back to Korea for contemporary evacuation just in 3 days and after around 20days, I could go back to Cairo again after Hosni Mubarak’s stepping down.
Though my works started a bit later, it was so exciting to get different information and news in a very historically important period of Egypt. My main task was to write reports about promising products from the perspective of Korean companies and about the trends of main industries or economy. For this, I had to find out information through many different sources, and this made me have a better understanding about Egypt.
Actually, one Korean chemical company pioneered their pharmaceutical business after they checked one of my reports about pharmaceutical industry of Egypt. In the beginning, writing a report was a big challenge but as time went by, I got more confident with this. Another responsibility of my work was to check Q&A on the web page of Cairo KBC everyday and answer to all questions. From the question about customs duty to the question about the guideline of investing in Egypt, they were in a wide range, and to answer these questions I got helped a lot from co-workers who had more experience and knowledge in this field. Doing this work, I could get more practical knowledge in a business field of Egypt. Having good relationships with Egyptian co-workers and Korean workers was also a great pleasure for me.
Another intern who worked with me was in charge of organizing and preparing trade delegations from Korea. I also helped her with this work, and attended this consultation of delegation as one of the translators.
Working for KBC in Cairo was such a great chance for me to experience a real business world, and above all, through many research works, I feel my perspective to see Egypt and Middle East was widened for sure. I strongly believe the internship in KBC of KOTRA gives us the chance to prepare ourselves to be professional in a business world and also the chance to have better understanding about the areas where we are.
