The Value of Studying TESOL at HUFS

이연희 (14기 - 2009년 가을)

I love TESOL!! I often recall the valuable period that I studied TESOL at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies three years ago. Although that period was challenging for me because of a mountain of assignments, studying TESOL had me be determined to get into a graduate school of English Language Education eventually. By studying TESOL, I became more interested in English Education and was given opportunities for hands-on experience in teaching as teaching practice is extensively integrated into theological knowledge in every course.

Above all, studying TESOL led me to be more interested in English Education. The professors always tried to elicit opinions from me before giving an answer, and they gave me many opportunities to think critically and creatively about teaching methodologies. By allowing students to have many discussions freely, the professors made me realize how much I was into English Education. As I developed an ability to solve hard questions on my own, and to find out appropriate answers with my peers or by myself, I felt fulfillment with studying TESOL. slowly, I felt an overwhelming desire to come up with my own ideas more and more when it comes to English education.

While studying TESOL at HUFS, I had many chances to apply theories to hands-on experience in teaching. For example, I had to make lesson plans, making use of theories (EIF and PDP framework) that I learned and had to teach students English with my own lesson plans in English. In addition, I was required to do micro-teaching, involving the certain methods that I learned during class time. In one case, I made a special writing test with my partner by utilizing the principles of making good writing tests given in a text book. Then, my partner and I made our classmates take the writing test we had made. Whenever I did teaching practice, I also got feedback from professors and my peers. Then, I assessed the strengths and weaknesses of my teaching and tests. As mentioned above, studying TESOL at HUFS was much more than just getting useful knowledge about English Education. It encouraged me to look at theories in a practical way.

However, the biggest reason why I loved TESOL at HUFS was that studying TESOL spurred me to figure out what I really wanted to be in my future and to pursue my real dream. While I studied TESOL at HUFS, I never felt bored in spite of a mass of tasks I had to complete in a given time. I realized that I really enjoyed attending classes and studying TESOL. Moreover, I became extremely passionate about studying at that time. Finding work which was enjoyable was very precious and valuable, so I made up my mind to continue to study English Education in more detail after completing the HUFS TESOL Certificate Program. Thus, I was determined to apply to the HUFS Graduate School of English Education and to be a real English educator in the future. In this way, I could make sure that I would achieve my goal of contributing to the English education system in Korea. Obviously, studying TESOL at HUFS got me to strive for my dream, that is to say investigating English Education more deeply.

Now, I still think about what would have happened if I hadn’t studied TESOL three years ago. If I hadn’t attended the HUFS TESOL certificate course last semester, I wouldn’t be at a graduate school of education now. From studying TESOL, I was changed to a person who was proud of studying English Education, enjoying studying English Education, applying theories in a practical way and deciding on a firm life goal. If somebody asked me about what the most important period in your life was, then I would no doubt answer, "The period of studying TESOL at HUFS".
