Latin American Studies

Bora Yun Moon

I had the great opportunity to participate in the Summer School of Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, where I could broaden my perspective related to economic, political and social conditions in Latin America. It was not just for my present study but also for its reputation as academic studies related to the region and the Dependence theory had developed in the ECLAC!!About 30 participatingstudentsare mostly from different countries of the region of Latin America, who were economists, sociologists and researchers, and thus we could actively discuss with different perspectives in the classroom, seeking to define a policy agenda to confront the persistent problems in Latin America.

School courses were designed many interesting topics related to economic growth, jobs, innovation, structural reforms, business, social development, human rights and sustainable development, etc. I have been especially interested in socio-economic issues such as inequality, poverty and informal economy ,as Latin American countries have developed over the past two decades with the objective of maintaining stable inflation, stimulating the export market and foreign direct investment, etc. However, considering the situation within the region where inequality, poverty (or extreme poverty), underemployment, the large income gap, the lack of security and corruption have not improved in many way. Many regional specialist of ECLAC helped usin the relation of developing our academic research, and each student had a tutor who gave us a valuable advice and share their academic experience.

Participating the economic school of ECLAC has been great and fruitful for my present study and my future career, deepening knowledge of different perspectives. I really appreciate specially to my professor and the dean of our graduated school Won-ho Kim who gave me many academic advice and encouraged me to do the field study in Latin America.
