테솔전문교육원에서는 저명학자 초청특강인 SLDS (Special Lectures from Distinguished Scholars) 이번 봄 학기 세 번째를 개최합니다.

  이번에 초청되는 분은 Hawaii Pacific University의 Dr. Klein 교수님으로서 TESOL 및 ESL 관련 깊숙이 관여하고 계시는 응용언어학자이십니다.   최초 Peace Corps봉사자로 한국땅을 밟으신 이후 Peace Corps스텝으로, 그리고 서강대 Fullbright 교환교수로 오시는 등 한국과 특별한 인연이 있으십니다.

  이번 발표의 주제도 한국인들의 TEE (Teaching English in English) 신장을 위한 발표로서 어떻게 TEE 능력이 신장이 되었는지 연구하신 사례를 다음과   같이 발표하시게 됩니다. TEE는 많은 한국인에게 흥미있는 주제인데 이를 어떻게 접근하고 연구하였는지 기대됩니다.

제   목: Practicing for Perfection in Teaching English in English

Abstract:

 In 2008, Korean President Lee, Myung-bak announced a plan to spend $4.2B to improve English teaching in Korea (Kim, KT, 2008).  An important piece of this plan is called TEE—Teaching English in English.  By 2013, 23,000 teachers are to be recruited who can successfully present an English class completely in English.  Some teachers-to-be have come to English-speaking countries to prepare for TEE.

An HPU TESOL student (“KK”) was videorecorded during an early practice-teaching session at HPU’s ELS.  Both the supervising and cooperating teachers gave KK feedback that her classroom English had many errors.  A second session was videorecorded exactly two weeks later; it was remarkably better.  Why?

We present video clips and data providing evidence of improvement.  We propose KK’s “secret” to her rapid development. The discussion session will allow the audience to question our findings and corroborate or judiciously criticize the recommendations we make from this case study.
