<국문초록>

 

베네딕트 앤더슨은 내셔널리즘에 관한 중요한 저작인 『상상의 공동체』에서 내셔널리즘의 기원은 유럽중심주의적 분석이 주장했던 것처럼 유럽이 아니라 18세기 후반~19세기 초반의 스페인령 아메리카라고 역설했다. 앤더슨은 내셔널리즘의 부상에 대한 전통적인 설명이 라틴아메리카에는 적용되지 않는다는 것을 알았다. 왜냐하면 라틴아메리카 내셔널리즘의 형성에 언어는 중요한 문제가 아니었고, 독립운동도 중간 계급으로부터 시작되지 않았으며, 하위 계급의 동원을 이끌어내지 못했기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 앤더슨은 크리오요가 의식적으로 스페인어를 사용하지 않는 대다수의 하위 계급의 주민을 동료-국민으로 규정했기 때문에 라틴아메리카 독립은 국민적 독립운동이라고 주장했다.

본 논문의 목적은 『상상의 공동체』에 대한 포괄적인 비평이다. 여기서 포괄적인 비평이라고 함은 내셔널리즘에 대한 개념적이고 역사적인 명제를 검토함을 뜻한다. 스페인과 스페인령 아메리카의 내셔널리즘에 대한 세밀한 연구는 내셔널리즘을 둘러싼 문화적 현상들이 내셔널리즘의 등장과 전개와 관련된 정치라는 점을 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다. 따라서 내셔널리즘의 문화적 특성을 이해하기 위해서는 내셔널리즘의 복합성을 분석하는 것이 필수적이다. 라틴아메리카 내셔널리즘에 대한 연구는 내셔널리즘에 대한 앤더슨의 규정을 넘어서서 상상의 공동체로서의 네이션을 새롭게 규정하는 계기가 될 것이다.

<영문초록>

 

One of most surprising turns in Benedict Anderson’s influential work on nationalism is that he claims that the origin of nationalism is found in the Spanish America during the late eighteenth and early nineteenthe centuries, and not in Europe, as Eurocentric analysts have insisted. Anderson acknowledges that the traditional explanation of the rise of nationalism do not work for Latin America, because language was not an issue, the independence movements did not stem from the middle classes, nor bring mobilization of the lower classes. Nonetheless, he insists that Latin American independence were national independence movements because the creoles consciously redefined large, lower-class, non-Spanish-speaking populations as fellow-nationals.

This paper aims to carry out a comprehesive critique of Imagined Communities, by which I mean a critique that interrogates both the conceptual and the historical thesis. A close study of nationalism in Spain and Spanish America make us understand that the cultural density of the phenomenon of nationalism lies in the politics of its production and deployment. A thick description of nationalism is therefore a necessary step for understanding its cultural characteristics. The Latin American case study leads us to modify Anderson’s definition of nationalism in order to suggest the alternative imagined community for the nation.
