<국문초록>

 

국경을 둘러싼 분쟁과 갈등에 대한 관심은 갈수록 높아져가고 있다. 여러 국가가 서로 국경을 접하고 있는 라틴아메리카의 경우 독립 이래 다양한 영토분쟁과 전쟁을 경험하였으며, 영토분쟁에 대한 연구가 활발하다. 본 논문은 여러 라틴아메리카의 사례 중 특히 아르헨티나와 칠레 간의 비글해협 분쟁을 분석하였다. 아르헨티나는 1982년 영국과 말비나스/포클랜드 군도의 영유권을 놓고 전쟁까지 치렀지만, 칠레와의 비글해협의 영유권에 대한 분쟁은 평화적으로 해결하였다. 본 연구는 비글해협 분쟁의 역사 및 평화적 해결 과정을 면밀히 분석함으로써 라틴아메리카 영토 분쟁에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하였다. 특히 비글해협 분쟁의 전개에 영향을 끼친 다양한 정치사회학적 변수들 중 종교, 언어 및 무역량이 비글해협 분쟁의 해결에 중요한 역할을 했다는 점을 발견하였다. 즉 칠레와 아르헨티나가 공유하는 가톨릭이라는 종교적 배경, 스페인어라는 문화적 공통분모 그리고 긴밀한 경제적 관계들이 두 국가 간 영토분쟁이 평화적으로 해결되는 데에 결정적인 역할을 했다는 점을 밝혔다. 비글해협 분쟁의 분석을 통해 본 논문은 영토분쟁이라는 매우 정치적인 사회현상을 분석하는 데에 정치사회적 요소들 역시 고려되어야한다는 점을 주장하고 있다.

Latin America consists of more than 20 countries and many of them share borders with each other and has experienced various border conflicts including territorial wars. As a result, Latin America offers us a fertile ground for border studies. Among various territorial conflicts, this study focuses on the Beagle Channel Conflict between Chile and Argentina. This study attempted to explore historical development of the conflict and its resolution. In doing so, we shed lights on various political, social and economic dimensions of the conflict. Among others, religion, language and trade relations emerged as important factors which played a significant role in inducing peaceful resolution of the conflict. Focusing on such political sociological dimensions of the conflict, this study contributed to more nuanced understanding of border conflicts in Latin America.
