Internship at KBC in Malaysia,

South and Southeast Asian Studies, Lee InJung

After graduation in 2007, I was working at a field irrelevant to my university major, Malaysian language. Longings for further studies on Malaysia drove me to enter the Graduate school in 2008. I spent a busy year doing various activities including assistantship at a research institute on Southeast Asia studies, internship at Indonesia Tourism office in Korea and the like. I could achieve knowledge not only on Malaysia but also on other countries in Southeast Asia comprehensively. Taking Malaysian courses, I prepared to become an area specialist. However, I felt something missing, because I had little life experience in Malaysia. I thought that internship at KBC in Malaysia could give me a chance to train myself as an expert on Malaysia

The KBC in Kuala Lumpur is quite large. There are many workers; which means lot of work. Two interns were dispatched and one of them was, of course, me in charge of preparations for consultations with trade delegations from Korea. The consultations were held once or twice a month and they are to facilitate Korean small- and medium-sized businesses enter the local market. I played a role as a communicator between the delegation or companies in Korea and the KBC. I also looked for buyers in Malaysia who want import Korean products.

Working at KBC in Malaysia was a great turning point in my life. The period of six month was short, but enormously important for my career. Working abroad was definitely different from any other things that I had experienced before. It required responsibility as a worker and as a Korean. In addition, it really was invaluable time to learn the attitudes that rookies should have. Also, I learned real communication skills. Rather than picking luxurious words, selecting the right word to deliver clearly was the matter.

I think internship at KBC is a privilege the hufs students have. My words to other students:” Don’t be afraid of challenging! If you just try, you can get something that no one else can.”
