European Union Studies

I served as an Intern at the Embassy of the ROK to the Czech Republic from February to October 2009. Before leaving for Czech, at the MOFAT(the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade), I learned the basic things to keep in mind during the work at the Embassy. After two week’s training, I flew to Czech with my heart fluttering for the life in Czech. As soon as I arrived at the Embassy, I exchanged greetings with the ambassador and the staffs. And then, I started to learn the work I had to do. Fortunately, there was an alumni working at the Embassy. I borrowed his hands for many times.

Compared to other embassies in Europe, the Korean Embassy in Czech is medium-sized one. But a whole laundry list of works happen every day in a consular section as there are many Korean residents in Czech. I mostly took charge of translating the Czech news to Korean, then passing it around to the Korean residents. Along with this work, I answered for maintaining homepage and checking e-mail. At first, the hardest thing for me was news translation. I had a hard time rendering a jargon into Korean smoothly. To overcome this difficulty, I scraped the paper and listened to the news every single day. By virtue of these efforts, I learned many of the jargons on the various fronts.

Although inexperienced, with the help and affection of the staffs, I could successfully complete the internship at the Korean Embassy in Czech for 6 months.

The most impressive thing, for me was the visit of Prime Minister Seung-Su Han to Prague. Prior to the two weeks of his visit, every staff at the Embassy thoroughly prepared for the visitation. Although it took only for three days, the efforts we had made were beyond description.

For the internship period, I put the most weight on getting to know the real life of the Czech. To make my wish come true, I met a lot of Czech people. Most of all, I got plenty of help from the students of the Charles University department of Korean. Now I think it was a great time to mingle and created emotional ties with them. Through this, I could understand not only the lingual part, but the cultural part of Czech.

I strongly believe internship is a good opportunity for all of our under graduate and graduate students. It gives us an opportunity to build a better career, which can help you make your dream come true.
