스페인 사람들에 의한 누에바 에스퍄냐 정복은 군사적 방법을 사용했으나 원주민 개종을 목적으로 하고 있었다. 이 과정에서 강제적이고 폭력적인 수단이 사용되었다. 그러나 탁발수도회들이 주도한 복음화는 폭력적 수단의 사용을 지양하고 있었다. 프란치스코회, 도미니코회, 아우구스티누스회 수사들은 원주민들을 개종시키기 위해 ‘평화적 선교’라고 하는 더 효과적인 방법을 사용했다. 수사들은 토착문화를 이해하려고 노력했고, 회화, 부조, 건축, 음악, 노래, 연극 등 문화와 예술적 요소들을 통하여 원주민들에게 접근했다. 수사들은 원주민 문화에 대해 심도 있는 연구를 진행했다. 그들은 새로운 상황에 자신의 종교를 적응시키는데 필요한 방법들을 고안해 내려고 노력했다. 이 노력은 상대적으로 단시일 내에 원주민을 개종시키는 성과를 내었다. 수사들이 원주민화 되려고 노력하는 만큼, 원주민도 그리스도교화 되었다. 평화적 선교는 두 세계의 문화적 혼합과 종교적 혼합 과정을 촉진시켰다. 평화적 복음화는 많은 과오와 한계에도 불구하고, 군사적 정복을 통한 개종과 비교했을 때 원주민들에게 더 유익한 것이었다. 누에바 에스파냐에서 탁발수도회의 선교는 종교적 측면 뿐 아니라 사회 전 영역에 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 연구는 누에바 에스파냐 복음화를 위해 문화와 예술적 요소들이 끼친 영향에 대해 연구하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다.

<영문초록>

 

The Spanish Conquest of New Spain was marked by a tendency of military conversion. It was a very common process to use coercive and violent measures. However, during the process of evangelization directed by the mendicant orders, such measures were reduced very significantly. The Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinians used another method more effective, for converting indians: the peaceful mission. The monks tried to understand the local culture and approached the indigenous population with cultural and artistic elements, such as painting, sculpture, architecture, music, singing, theater, etc. The friars developed studies about the Indian culture. They tried to find the proper way to adapt their religion in the new American context. This effort facilitated conversion of natural. The friars got indigenized, simultaneously the indians got cristianized. The peaceful mission helped the process of syncretism and cultural fusion of both worlds. Despite the errors and limitations, it can be said that the peaceful evangelization was very beneficial for the Indians compared to military conquest. The mission of the mendicant orders in New Spain was not limited strictly to religion, but includes all the areas of life. This research emphasizes the importance of cultural element and artistic element for the evangelization of New Spain.
