GSIAS, Media, Peace and Conflict Studies, '08 Lee, Hwa Yeon

   There is a saying that “To meet new people is to see, learn and experience new world.” In the University for PEACE, there are a various range of people coming from at least 50 countries, in which I can easily get access with their diverse cultures, languages and life patterns. Also, UPEACE makes a room for everybody to freely and actively exchange their ideas and thoughts on what peace is and how peace can be achieved, which is quite interesting but challenging. Another thing to fascinate me is UPEACE enables students to think over the likeliest role and responsibility that global citizens should take. Meanwhile, we could learn how to deal with a series of impending issues which global society gets stuck by as well as raise our voice with more reasonable but peaceful ways.  At the last, UPEACE is the ‘Creative, Passionate and Active’ Network. I think UPEACE is such an astonishing place replete with enterprising energy and strength to make the impossible thing happen. ‘Asian Night’ was a representative example!

I was the representative of the Asian Night Committee which was consisting of 20 Asian countries. During the preparation period, I deeply realized how much difficult 20 countries reached an agreement in making decisions on several agendas; however, I observed the great contribution of their energy and passion committed to the festival, which made a fantastic finale in the end. All students and staff of UPEACE as well as residents in the Ciudad Colon were fully absorbed in the Asian culture, which was a beautiful moment to me. I could not forget about the Asian Night, which is the most invaluable and unforgettable asset that I will have at UPEACE. I believe this is the peculiar present UPEACE gives to me.

‘새로운 사람을 만난다’는 것은 곧 새로운 세상을 배우고 경험한다는 것을 의미합니다.  유엔평화대학교는 현재 50여 개국의 학생들이 모여 있는 다문화 네트워크로서, 다양한 문화와 언어, 그리고 생각들을 자유롭게 교류하고 표출할 수 있는 멋진 곳입니다. 저 역시 유피스를 통해 새롭고 다양한 사람들을 만나면서, 그들의 세상을 직/간접적으로 경험하고 있습니다. 그러는 가운데 우리는 진정한 ‘평화’가 무엇인지 그리고 ‘평화로운 지구촌 사회’를 건설하기 위해서는 어떠한 노력이 필요한지에 대해서 진지하게 고민하고 토론함으로써, 서로에 대해 이해하게 되고, 더욱 가까워질 수 있게 됩니다. 유피스가 매력적인 또 다른 이유는 국제사회 일원으로서 갖춰야 할 역할과 책임에 대해 생각해보게 한다는 점입니다. 현재 세계가 당면한 여러가지 문제해결에 있어 기존의 방식이 아닌, 보다 평화적이고 창조적인 그러나 합리적이고 이성적인 접근방식을 찾을 수 있도록 유피스는 우리의 시각과 사고의 폭을 넓혀주는데 도움을 줍니다. 마지막으로 유피스는 ‘Creative, Passionate, and Active Network’입니다. 감히 생각해보지도 않았던 일들을 실현시키고자 하는 대담함이 있고, 무슨 일에든 진취적이며, 생동감이 넘쳐 흐르는 곳이라고 할 수 있지요. 이번에 ASIAN NIGHT 행사를 치루면서, 정말 많은 것들을 느끼고 배울 수 있었습니다.

ASIAN NIGHT COMMITTEE Representative로서 총 책임을 맡고 있었던 저에게는 행사를 준비하는 과정이 매우 어렵고 힘든 시간이었습니다. 약 20여개국의 아시아 학생들이 모여 서로의견을 교환하고 하나의 합일점을 찾는 다는 것은 매우 힘든 과제였지요. 하지만 그들의 열정과 관심, 헌신을 통해서 행사를 위해 준비해야 할 모든 것들을 차근히 준비하였고, 이로써 ASIAN NIGHT는 대단원의 막을 내렸습니다. 유피스 전교생과 교직원들, 그리고 Ciudad Colon 마을사람들 모두가 아시아 문화에 흠뻑 취하고 즐기는 아름다운 광경이 연출되었지요. 전 그날밤을 잊지 못할거에요. 비록 고생은 했지만 모든 이들이 빚어낸 아름다운 결과물.. 이것이 바로 유피스가 저에게 우리 모두에게 주는 선물이 아닐까요
