A Close Paper on the Internship in IFANS
Youn Jung Joo
Department of International Law and Human Rights
As a student majored in international law and human rights, at the same time, having been specifically interested in the Middle East politic and terrorism, with a desire to be a specialist of those subjects, nothing could have be better than doing an internship in Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS), a research institute directly affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The internship period was from June 2008 to August 2008, and the main task assigned to each intern during that period was to write a thesis under the advice from a professor, who has worked in the institute, having been prominent figure in South Korea as a think tanker offering recommendations to governmental policy. The task included from choosing the topic each intern was interested in to gathering information regarding that issue, and from writing the thesis within given time to presenting it before professors in IFANS, and other interns.
The topic in which I was interested to write was, no doubt, the issue relevant to terrorism and Middle East, and the professor advising me was pro. Nam Sik, In, the specialist in this area as an international relations scholar. Inspired by his insightful and profound inputs, the topic I had in mind was embodied as “The Critical Approaches to the Strategies of Counter-Terrorism by a comparative study between Multilateral Approach by the United Nations and Unilateral approach by the United States.” Since the understanding of terrorism cannot be fully obtained without strategies employed by the U.S., the impartibility between two subjects led me to focus on that question, enabling me devote to study it so as to find “my answer” on that question. That was not easy task at all, rather strenuous and laborious work, too heavy to be finalized within 2 months. With the encouragement mixed with a sort of pressure from professor, however, I was able not only to write it on time, but to learn and comprehend the phenomenon about which I was always curious. Despite the fact that, from the perspective of scholars, it was neither outstanding enough to be published in any periodical, nor creative enough to attract the widespread public gaze, the thesis was the one that enabled me to enhance the intellectual sight to look at the world. That was enough for me to gain more comprehension about the subject, and to feel that I was better than yesterday. Thanks to the great experience in IFANS, I was able to be grown more.
