Foreign Language Training and Testing Center

As a research organization affiliated with HUFS, the Foreign Language Training and Testing Center is renowned in Korea for foreign language training and testing, as well as for its long history. The Foreign Language Training and Testing Center, unrivaled in Korea, was established in 1974 with support from the government. Through 24 foreign language curriculums tailored to various purposes and levels, about 25,000 students, including government officials, business executives and university students, have developed their language skills in English, Chinese, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Malaysian or Hindi.

Center for Interpreting and Translation

The Center for Interpreting and Translation is Korea’s best institution specializing in professional interpretation and translation. It has contributed to Korean national development over the past 23 years through professional services and research activities in the studies of interpretation and translation. Relaunched as a part of HUFS Foreign Language Business Headquarters on August 1, 2006, the CIT is emerging as a world-class organization in interpretation and translation as it provides related services to corporations and government organizations. It has also opened new horizons in literature translation and organized various training programs on interpretation and translation. Initially founded as an autonomous organization by the graduates of GSIT in 1983, it has provided top-quality interpretation and translation services, including simultaneous interpretation, to various government organization and companies. Until the Interpretation and Translation Institute was established in August 2001, the CIT was also involved in defining theories in the studies of interpretation and translation. Literature translation and training functions have been added to CIT, which has supported international affairs of government organizations and corporate customers over the past 23 years. It now consists of the Interpretation Division, Translation Division, Literature Translation Division and Training Division. It currently has over 800 high-caliber conference interpreters and professional translators in eight different languages: English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. All the interpreters and translators working at the CIT have completed two years of systematic education in interpretation and translation and been selected through rigorous screening.

Center for Korean Language and Culture

The Center for Korean Language and Culture is an institution specializing in the Korean language. Based on over 50 years of experience in teaching foreign languages, it was first opened within the Foreign Language Training and Testing Center as a Korean language program targeting students with origins in other countries and Koreans who have lived overseas. Since then, students from 18 countries have studied the Korean language through this program. With growing interest in Korea worldwide, it was upgraded to an independent educational organization in 2006 in order to provide practical and professional education that satisfies the needs of international learners.

i-HUFS Enterprise

The i-HUFS Enterprise, a school business, was founded in September 2004. through proactive use of HUFS’ infrastructure for foreign language education, it initiates international exchange programs, including English camps and English villages.

Global Leadership Academy

Opened in April 2001 to produce area experts based in education of 26 languages used worldwide and the area studies available at HUFS. It promotes excellent language proficiency and extensive knowledge of foreign culture in order to provide advanced education to high-ranked personnel at public organizations and private companies and cultivate professionals in the era of advancement and globalization.

University Press Center

Established in 1954 together with HUFS, the University Press Center became fully kicked off in 1955 when it published the first issue of the HUFS Gazette. Since first publishing a “Russian-Korean Dictionary” in 1963, it has published 39 foreign language dictionaries. The latest is a “Czech-Korean Dictionary” published in 2007. Recently, it has been selected for the Excellent Academic Publication Support Project initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Its publications have also been chosen as Excellent Academic Books by the National Academy of Sciences.

FLEX Center

The FLEX (Foreign Language Examination) Center was established to manage and operate the FLEX test more systematically and professionally. The FLEX test has been developed by HUFS and is jointly administered by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The FLEX Center is currently developing examinations for 19 languages in addition to the seven languages currently administered (English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese). Going forward, it will develop systems for balanced and scientific evaluation on 26 languages. The center also hosts a foreign language competition with a most distinguished tradition and the longest history in the country for elementary, junior high and high school students nationwide.

HUFS TESOL Professional Education Center

There is higher demand for skilled English teachers who have both professional language and teaching competencies. To satisfy such demand, the HUFS TESOL Professional Education Center was founded as an independent educational institution. In consideration of the fact that teachers need to have a certain level of teaching skills as well as English proficiency, the center is offering education on all requirements that need to be met by a professional English education expert, including training to raise English fluency, education on theories on teaching methods and application of theories on the field, as well as education on evaluating, reviewing, and producing teaching materials. All professors at the center are foreign professors with expertise in English education. The lectures, which are given in English, help the students easily understand the content and learn how to teach. In addition, students are required to attend English seminars (practice teaching), such as the Classroom Observation, Lesson Planning, Micro-teaching, and Feedback Session. Students are also presented with an opportunity to practice teaching at overseas universities, including the University of Missouri-Columbia, San Diego State University, and University of Hawaii at Manoa. The center is also holding special lectures by inviting world-renowned scholars to the Special Lectures from Distinguished Scholars (SLDS), which is held every semester, thereby allowing for students to take advancements forward towards becoming an English education expert.
