Latin America, which consists of 33 countries including Brazil, still remains unfamiliar and far away to us. It is not easy to fully understand this region just through the foreign news. We have to admit that general impression of this region is quite negative and the words such as coup, dictatorship, debt crisis and under-development come to our mind.

Latin America was the place of cultural prosperity before the arrival of Spanish conquistador. It was the cradle of Mayan and Aztec Civilization of Mexico, and Incan Civilization of Peru. Besides, it is a rich repository of natural resources and now it’s entering into the era of development through economic, political, cultural and social integration. Latin American countries are getting together and opening their market more and more. NAFTA (now, USMCA) and MERCOSUR started to accelerate the integration and they are ready to receive more countries. Latin America became a significant market that we cannot overlook.

The object of the Department of Latin American Studies of Graduate School of International and Area Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies is to cultivate Latin American area experts in the field of politics, economics and sociology, and provides various inter-disciplinary seminars and special lectures to the students. The politics major studies the political development and international relations, the economics major studies the macro economics of the region and interaction with the international economy and regional integration, and the sociology major studies history, culture, social structure and change.

The Department of Latin American Studies opens seminar classes each semester with support of KIEP (Korea Institute for International Economic Policy) and invites high-ranking officials and experts to give special lectures. It also supports the students to study and experience corresponding areas and regions through “3+1 Student Dispatch Program” and lots of internship opportunities.

33개 국가로 이루어진 중남미 대륙은 우리에게는 여전히 생소하고 먼 지역이다. 외신을 통해 전해지는 중남미 관련 뉴스만으로 이 지역을 진정으로 이해하기에는 한계가 있으며, 중남미 대륙에 대한 인식 저변에는 군사 쿠데타, 독재, 외채, 저개발 등 부정적인 인상이 강하게 남아 있는 것이 사실이다.

중남미 대륙은 문화적으로는 멕시코의 마야와 아스테카 문명, 페루의 잉카 문명 등 찬란한 문화의 발상지였으며 천혜의 자연 환경, 풍부한 자원, 다양한 문화의 보고일 뿐만 아니라, 21세기 들어 정치, 경제, 사회 문화적 통합을 통해 역사 발전의 새로운 서막을 열어가고 있다. 경제 통합 움직임을 통해 분쟁지역이던 국경이 열리고 점점 더 많은 시장을 개방하고 있다. NAFTA(現 USMCA)와 MERCOSUR는 통합을 가속하기 시작하였고, 더 많은 국가들을 통합 공동체로 받아들일 준비를 하고 있다. 이제 중남미는 우리가 결코 간과할 수 없는 중요한 시장이 되었다.

한국외국어대학교 중남미학과는 정치, 경제, 사회문화의 각 세부전공 분야에서 중남미지역전문가를 양성하는 데 목표를 두고, 여러 전문 분야에 걸친 세미나와 특강 기회를 학생들에게 제공하고 있다. 정치 분과에서는 거시적인 관점에서 지역의 정치발전과 국제관계를 이해하고, 경제 분과는 중남미의 거시경제, 세계경제와의 상호작용 및 지역통합 등을 공부하며 사회문화 분과는 역사와 문화, 사회 구조 및 변화를 폭넓게 이해하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.

그리고 중남미학과에서는 대외경제정책연구원(KIEP)의 지원을 받아 각 학기마다 세미나 수업을 개설하며, 국내외 정부기관 및 기구와 기업의 고위직 인사뿐 아니라 각 분야 전문가들이 초청되어 강의를 하고 있다. 또한 “3+1파견학생제도”와 기타 다양한 인턴쉽 기회를 통해서 해당 지역을 좀더 깊이 있게 경험하고 연구할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.
