- 한국외국어대학교는 외국어 및 지역학 교수와 인문-사회과학 및 자연과학 교수와의 학제적 공동연구로 세계 각 지역의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 법률, 과학, 기술, 역사에 관한 연구를 체계적이며 포괄적으로 수행해 나갈 수 있는 국제지역연구의 이상적인 두뇌집단을 보유하고 있습니다.

- 이러한 외대의 특성을 살려 정보, 연구, 연수의 공급기관으로서 국가경쟁력 우위확보에 기여하며, 정부 정책과 기업 경영 전략 결정에 실질적 도움이 되도록 국제 지역 연구-연수에서 독창적 비교 우위 분야를 개척하고 국제 전문 인력이 활용할 수 있는 지식 및 기술의 확산 역할을 수행하기 위해 외국학종합연구센터를 설립 운영하고 있습니다.

- 국제지역연구센터는 2008년 2월부터 기존의 외국학종합연구센터의 명칭을 변경하여 사용하고 있습니다.

Center for International Area Studies (CIAS) is a non-profit research institution established in 1993 sponsored by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), whose overarching purpose is to conduct research on area studies. CIAS has 12 affiliated research institutes and coordinates their research works.
I am the Director, Kyung Won, Chung. CIAS aims to contribute to Korea's national competitiveness as a provider of information, training and research. CIAS is also devoted to making more peaceful world by enhancing endeavors after sustainable development.
CIAS pursues research in international area studies and provides assistance in the government's and companies' decision-making processes. CIAS is also oriented toward formulating and documenting information on the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of other nations and global regions for research purposes and tries to expand its scope of applied knowledge and technology.

* Missions of CIAS
1. Provision of Information on International Areas
CIAS analyzes the up-date information sent via satellite from international new networks as well as from correspondents all over the world. The information gathered from various sources includes the latest news reports on the political and economic situations of each nation, in addition to the reports on technological advances and market analyses for individual products. All of this information, with those on the internet and printed material from all over the world, is analyzed and compiled by expert researchers to aid the government and private businesses in their globalization efforts.

2. Study of International Areas
CIAS complex, which includes three buildings for research lecture and residence was established in 1999. 125 researchers, including chief researchers with doctorate degrees and research assistants were recruited for studying twelve global regions: China, Japan, Russia, EU, Eastern Europe and Balkans, Britain and U.S., Central and South America, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The research staff conducts independent research on international areas. CIAS has access to 23 affiliated institutes of international area and comparative studies. Through the aforementioned in-house research staff, CIAS conducts in-depth studies of international areas.

3. Regional Studies and Foreign Language Education
Based on the knowledge and experience HUFS has acquired, CIAS offers foreign language programs for Koreans commissioned by local businesses, as well as Korean language programs for foreigners. 26 Departments teaching 30 different languages and the 467-member teaching staff from in and out of Korea will assist in the programs, as well as the Graduate School for Interpretation and Translation. CIAS will also provide education programs conducted by the teaching staff at HUFS in trade issues, as well as studies in the regional environment, culture, and social institutions. The text of the courses will be compiled from satellite broadcasts, overseas correspondent reports and newspapers from o9ver 20 nations. This will assist the overseas operations of public officials and employees of Korean companies.
