Teaching English Language Skills (TELS) 1 - Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation

This subject is designed to help students learn how to effectively teach listening, speaking and pronunciation in an English education environment and to apply this teaching method to actual classes.

Teaching English Language Skills (TELS) 2 - Reading, Writing and Grammar

This subject is designed to help students learn how to teach more effective and strategic techniques by presenting practical reading and writing teaching methods to students. The additional objective of this class is to present various theoretical issues related to reading and writing teaching methods to teachers.

Materials Development

This subject emphasizes the theoretical aspects related to the production of English teaching materials and understanding the actual production process and utilization of materials, and is carried out by dividing it into two related parts as follows:

• Theoretical beliefs for the purpose of foreign language teaching and importance of teaching materials
• Practical experience of materials development and research

TESOL Methodology

The learning objectives of this subject are to examine the issues related to second language acquisition, especially in EFL teaching contexts, and to intensively identify the characteristics of the language acquisition process and several factors that can influence language learners.

Multimedia & Materials

This course will explore pedagogical methods and practical implications as they relate to the use of multimedia and materials in the ESL classroom. Specifically, students will learn how to appropriately integrate multimedia (ex. presentation software, video, audio, educational websites) and materials (ex. worksheets, flashcards, study boards and games) into ESL lessons.

Testing

The objective of this subject is to help students learn the practical elements of the development of foreign language related questions based on theoretical learning about basic principles and procedures of tests. That is, through this class, you will be able to explore theories of language use and language teaching goals, as well as different kinds of language tests and theoretical and practical aspects of tests.

This course is designed to help students improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing, which are the four skills to use English efficiently.

YL TESOL Courses

Literacy

This course introduces theoretical and practical foundations of beginning reading. "Learning to read" is critical to reading development because it greatly influences reading development later on. The English language is opaque compared to transparent languages such as Spanish, German or Korean, so children are often confused with sound letter correspondence in beginning years. For this reason, this course emphasizes the role and importance of bottom-up reading skills such as phonics, word decoding, and word identification.

Teaching Listening, Speaking and TEE

This course has two goals: 'teaching spoken language' and 'teaching English through English'(TEE). Since being exposed to a language learning environment is a better way for children to language learning rather than being taught in a formal context, teacher's talk itself can be valuable a resource for learning English. Therefore, the best way to teaching listening and speaking is to ensure that teachers are equipped to use English efficiently and effectively in the classroom.

YL Materials Development

The course is designed to help students learn about lesson planning, task sequencing, and material development in teaching English to young learners. Students will be able to evaluate, select, adapt, and create books, course materials, and art crafts for their own students.

YL TESOL Methodology

The course is designed to help students become aware of and practiced in various methods of language teaching including Total Physical Response, Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Instruction, Whole Language Approach, and Theme-Based Instruction. It will also help students understand the principles and methods in designing and utilizing various classroom activities for young learners such as chants, songs, games, plays, and projects.

Project Learning

This course introduces basic concepts of project-based instruction for young learners. After reviewing the theory of project learning, the course moves to practices in the classroom. Theme-based or topic-based instruction, which are often used in the field of ELT, will be defined, and key issues about project-based instruction will be covered.

Storytelling

The course is designed to help students learn how stories and storytelling can be used for teaching English to young learners. Students will learn various storytelling approaches and techniques.
