Internship



Internship in Missouri

 

 

Purposes
The TESOL Internship Program is designed to assist students to :
1.Increase their comfort level and expand their use of American conversational English.
2.Participate in content-based advanced ESL educational classes designed to expand vocabulary and 
   improve American-English accents.
3.Know available resources and education technology for improving English teaching.
4.Design appropriate lessons and materials for teaching diverse age groups ability levels.
5.Practice teaching English / reading with lower achieving American grade school students.
6.Practice teaching English with non-native speakers with tutorial supervision and feedback.
7.Develop an understanding of American culture through course work and planned  experiences.
8.Understand the use of continuous assessment through personal experience and practice with students.

Emphasized areas
1. Personal development of the student as a non-native English speaker
   The student will improve her/his use of idioms, slang, and use of advanced vocabulary.
   Students will engage in conversational English, while improving their pronunciation, tone, and use
   of American English. 
   They will also expand their knowledge of American culture through field trips and discussion of
   these experiences in the classroom.
 
2.Methods and Information related to teaching English to Korean and other non-native  speakers
   Considerable time is spent on developing lessons, use of authentic materials, linking theory and
   practice, motivating the learner and promoting oral language development through appropriate lesson
   and classroom facilitation.

3. Practice teaching/ assessing
   The student wil prepare a report analyzing errors and providing ideas for future learning. They will also tutor an English  
   speaking, high-needs grade school student. The student teachers will attend after-school study sessions and be paired
   with children, primarily African American, who need individualized help with reading. 
   The students will also assess the English language learning needs of a non-native speaker. Finally, the Korean English
   teachers will practice teaching in classrooms of the Asian Affairs Center. 
   Students in these classes are primarily Korean or Chinese government officials or scholars whose English is at
   Beginning to Intermediate Levels. Some additional student teaching placements may occur in the Public School System.
   Adult Education Program or in other parts of the University of Missouri.

 

Program Components 
Academic Workshops and American Culture Seminars

Various TESOL workshops and seminars are presented by experienced English teachers and instructors with years of teaching experience. Some seminars will include additional sessions of practicum for TESOL students to work individually and in groups for practical, hands-on teacing and learning that will enhance classroom instruction and lessons.

Professional Presentation Classes

Professional Presentation classes have been designed to provide an intensive English speaking experience for TESOL participants. The coursework includes a variety of speech and drama activities geared toward enhancing the skills necessary for effective communication.
The activities have been developed to help TESOL participants increase their speaking skills, improve vocabulary, diction, and pronunciation, and gain confidence in various speaking situations.


Observation and Teaching in American Schools

TESOL students will have observation experiences in pre-schools and/or elementary, middle, or high schools in Columbia, Missouri oberserving experienced teachers working with American students or students from various nationalities and coutries.
TESOL students will then create their own lesson plans and teach in assigned ESL or regular classrooms in various pre-school, public, and/or private shcools.


Observation and Teaching Adult Second Language Learners

TESOL students will observe ESL classes taught by experienced Asian Affairs Center instructors who teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes of international students and shcolars.
TESOL students will be assighed to teach the adult second language learners.


Tutoring American and Asian Students

TESOL participants will tutor African-American students in an after-school tutoring program and Asian visiting scholars, students, or chidren of scholars studying in Cloumbia, Missouri.


American Ambassador

Opportunities will be provided for involvement with American Ambassadors to develop friendships, become language partners, and to enjoy outings, socializing, and fun.


American Cultureal Experiences

Trips to neaby cities, visits to American homes, participation in local festivals and sporting events help the students better understand American culture.
