최현희 교수

한국 근현대 문학이 전공 분야이다. 성균관대학교 국어국문학과, 서울대학교 대학원 국어국문학과 (석사, 박사수료), 미국 어바인 캘리포니아대학 동아시아어문학과 (박사)를 졸업했다. 일제강점기 말기의 한국과 일본의 문화를 비교 연구한 “식민지인의 도둑맞은 이름: 식민지 말기 한국의 “문화”, 1937-1945”가 박사학위 논문이다.
일본 도쿄외국어대학 총합국제학연구원 외국인연구원 (2011-2012), KAIST 인문사회과학부 초빙교수 (2014-2015), 서울대학교 국어국문학과 및 비교문학전공 강사 (2015-2017) 등을 지냈다. 한국현대문학회, 상허학회, 반교어문학회에서 연구이사를, 국제한국문학문화학회, 한국비교문학회에서 편집위원을 맡았거나 맡고 있다. 공저로 『동아시아 예술 담론의 계보』, 『한국현대소설이 걸어온 길』, 『이상(李箱)의 사상과 예술』 등이 있고 한국근현대 문학에 관한 다수의 논문을 발표했다. 한국근대문학에 대한 탈식민주의적, 비교문학적 연구와 모더니즘의 글로벌 콘텍스트에서의 번역 과정을 주제로 연구를 진행 중이다. 한국외대에서 한국학과에서는 기존의 지역학의 한계를 벗어난 한국학의 새로운 교육 모델을 수립하기 위하여 노력하고 있다.

My area of expertise is modern Korean literature. I hold BA in Korean and English from Sungkyunkwan University, MA in modern Korean literature from Seoul National University, and PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures from University of California, Irvine. My PhD dissertation, “The Purloined Name of the Colonized: “Culture” in Late Colonial Korea, 1937-1945,” is a comparatist study on Korean and Japanese cultures during the last stage of Japanese colonial rule in Korea.
Before joining the faculty of the Korean Studies at HUFS in 2015, I worked for Institute for International Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (2011-12), humanities and social sciences division at KAIST (2014-15), and departments of Korean and comparative literature at Seoul National University (2015-17). I co-authored three Korean language books on Yi Sang, history of contemporary Korean fiction, and the genealogy of East Asian discourse on art. My papers frequently appear in academic journals in the field of Korean studies. My current book project, tentatively titled The Purloined Name of the Colonized, is a post-colonialist and comparatist study on aesthetic modernism, popular culture, and literary theories from colonial Korea. As for the second research project, I am working on the spread of modernist ideas and canons in the global context.

한국현대사를 전공한 역사학자이다. 서울대학교 국사학과에서 박사학위를 받고, 같은 대학교 산하의 규장각한국학연구원 선임연구원과 통일평화연구원 연구교수를 거쳐, 2017년부터 한국외국어대학교 한국학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 저서 『폭격』(창비, 2013)으로 김진균상(학술부문)을 수상했다. 저서 『폭격: 미공군의 공중폭격 기록으로 읽는 한국전쟁』,『냉전의 마녀들: 한국전쟁과 여성주의 평화운동』, 『평화인문학이란 무엇인가』(공저), 『폭력이란 무엇인가』(공저) 등을 집필했다.

I am a historian who studies modern Korean history. I received my Ph.D. at the Department of Korean history, Seoul National University. The subject of my doctoral dissertation is about the aerial bombing by the United States Air Force during the Korean War. I won the Kim Chinkyun Award in 2014 for the best scholarly book of the year.
Before joining the faculty at the Department of Korean Studies at the HUFS, I worked for the Department of Korean history, Seoul National University (lecturer, 2006-2009), Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University (senior researcher, 2009-2011), and Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, Seoul National University (research professor, 2011-2015). I am the author of P’okkyŏk [Bombing] (Changbi, 2013), “Overturned Time and Space: Drastic Changes in the Daily Lives of North Koreans during the Korean War” (Asian Journal of Peacebuilding, IPUS, 2014)” and “Actualized Stigma: The historical formation of anti-Americanism in North Korea” (Modern Asian Studies, Cambridge University Press, 2017), etc.

한국 디아스포라 및 인종학을 전공한 문화학자이다. 한국외국어대학교 (학사, 최우수상), 델라웨어대학교 (학사, 준최우등, 파이 베타 카파), 에모리대학교 (석사), 미시간대학교 (박사)를 졸업했다. 미시간대학교 다양성연구소 및 한국학 박사후연구원과 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 연구교수를 거쳐, 2022년부터 한국외국어대학교 한국학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 한국의 힙합과 인종 글로 왕가리 마타이 상 (2015)을 수상, 한국학중앙연구원 펠로우십으로 작성된 박사논문 “한흑혼혈인의 영상 족보: 미국과 한국 문화에서의 트랜스내셔널 재현”은 랄프 헨리 가브리엘 박사논문상 후보에 올랐다 (2019). 디아스포라 및 문화 과목으로 미시간대학교 우수 강의상을 수상했다 (2016, 2021).

I am a cultural studies scholar of the Korean diaspora and ethnic studies. I received my B.A. from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, B.A. from the University of Delaware, M.A. from Emory University, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Before joining HUFS in 2022, I was a postdoctoral fellow for the National Center for Institutional Diversity and Korean Studies at the University of Michigan and Research Professor at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. My work on Korean hip hop and race was recognized by the Wangari Maathai Essay Award in 2015. My dissertation, “Visual Genealogies of Mixed-Race Black Koreans: Transnational Representations in American and Korean Cultures,” supported by the Academy of Korean Studies fellowship, was nominated for the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize in 2019. At the University of Michigan, my teaching was recognized by the teaching awards in 2016 and 2021.
