영문 : What does the ‘Asian’ mean in Asian sport celebrity? With a collection of nine essays on Asian sport celebrities variously associated with Australia, Belgium, China, Japan, New Zealand, North Korea, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States, this book offers a comprehensive understanding of the multi-faceted construction of what it means to be Asian from the perspectives of race, ethnicity and regionality. Sport celebrity, as a modern invention, is disseminated from the West to the rest of the globe including Asia, and so are its functions of symbolizing particular values, desires and personalities idolized and idealized within their respective societies. While Asian athletes were historically depicted as weak, fragile and biologically ‘unsuited’ to modern sport, the emergence of more than a few world-class Asian athletes in the twenty-first century demands an in-depth inquiry into the relationship between sport celebrity and the representation of Asia.

This book is therefore essential for those interested in a range of socio-cultural issues—including globalization, transnationalism, migration, modernity, (post-)coloniality, gender politics, spectacle, citizenship, Orientalism, and nationalism—within and beyond Asia.

It was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

한글 : 아시아 스포츠 유명인사들 그리고 '아시아인'은 무엇을 의미하는가? 이 책은 호주, 벨기에, 중국, 일본, 뉴질랜드, 북한, 필리핀, 한국, 대만, 미국 등과 다양한 아시아 스포츠 유명인들에 관한 9편의 에세이를 모아 아시아인이 된다는 것이 인종, 민족적 관점에서 무엇을 의미하는지 다각적으로 이해할 수 있도록 했다. 지방과 지방 스포츠 유명인사는 현대의 발명품으로서 서양에서 아시아를 포함한 전 세계로 전파되어, 특정한 가치, 욕망, 개성을 상징하는 기능 또한 각각의 사회에서 우상화되고 이상화된다. 아시아 선수들은 역사적으로 현대 스포츠에 약하고 연약하며 생물학적으로 '부적합한 것'으로 묘사되었지만, 21세기에 몇몇 세계적인 아시아 선수들의 등장은 스포츠 유명인사와 아시아의 대표성 사이의 관계에 대한 심층적인 논의를 요구한다.

따라서 이 책은 세계화, 초국가주의, 이주, 현대화, 식민주의, 성 정치, 구경, 시민권, 오리엔탈리즘, 민족주의 등 아시아 내외의 다양한 사회문화적 이슈에 관심이 있는 사람들에게 필수적이다.
